Are expansys an authorised netgear agent? netgear will only send the harddrive if you purchase the readynas from an authorised dealer.

They are advertising it on that link above so I guess so. I had the same concern when I got mine from Novatech, but the disk came through ok.

Can you run an app on these to categorise your music collection? Say by Album, Artist etc... Thanks.

Here's the form for claiming free disk (I got a Seagate 7000.12):

Can you format these with NTFS or do they use some wacky propriatory file system like the old Netgear Toaster did that will leave you up s** creek if the enclosure dies?
If it uses a sensible file system it looks like a bargain.
#11
I think they use ext3, which isn't proprietary.

I have had mine for about a week after going for the Misco deal. It is EXT3 but will support FAT32/NTFS drives externally through one of the 3 USB ports. Great little box. Good bittorrent client. Took me a while to configure this with 2 RAID 0 drives as I wanted maximum capacity and didn't really care about redundancy (it defaults to RAID 1)

Still can't manage to access the torrent client remotely though... :?

What, I'm asking (I guess!) is if the enclosure fails, can the HD's be removed and plugged into a Windows PC and the file system mounted so you can get the data off?

Yes, it can be mounted on a Windows system, you just need to install some software. Do a search for Windows ext3 on the internet and you'll find it. Of course, if you've got Linux you won't have any problems.

What is the difference between this and NVX? Or is it the same?
#16
I ordered this last night from Misco with a £40 500gb hard drive - came out at £195 altogether with the free 500gb to come.
What finally swayed it was the streamability to PS3s....I'm looking forward to sticking loads of films on it, as well as having mirrored backups of all my data.

Next step is getting a bolt put in the floor so I can fasten it down.....no point having everything digital I own in one place if it can be carted off by a robber.

Indeed, the only problem will be finding a way to spread your genes.

how would this compare to the ixybox NAS4220?

Just looking at the Specs of Icky it seems to be good product. However Netgear firmware seems to support more wide range of features and it has large number of addons too so Netgear product is clearly a superior product hence the extra price seems to be justified.

They use EXT3, which is faster as a filesystem than Fat32 (significantly faster) and Fat32 is faster than NTFS. You can also format external drives to be either default Fat32 (slow) or Ext3. You can download EXT3 drivers for Windows and Mac alike. EXT3 is a Linux based filesystem, and Linux machines will probably read them as standard.

With linux users they're usually spread all over the computer desk, so no worries there...

I was looking at this unit, but a couple of things are putting me off. Appreciate any advice.
My intention was to have two HDDs with x-raid (or raid 5) set up, and a USB WD My Book 1Tb attached to the ReadyNAS for backup.
Q1. How will I backup to the My Book, and will the back be in Windows readable format (i.e. not EXT3).
Q2. The compatibility list for external HDDs is woeful. Will the My Book work.

On the whole the compatible HDDs don't seem to get great reviews.
Q3 Any recommendations.

Thanks.

Scan had this at £~155 last week when the Misco & Dabs deals were on.
Currently out of stock, but they expect delivery/stock on the 23rd if anyone wants to pre-order (like I have).

I know this has expired, but it might get referred to if it comes up again.

I got this yesterday....and it's loud. Starts off ridiculously loud, but then gets significantly quieter after a few minutes....but it's still an annoying hum....it won't work in the lounge.

Has anyone applied and got their free HD yet? I did so ages ago and have got nothing. I emailed netgear twice and still no response... Pour....
