Cheap & basic 2 xSATA hard disk NAS enclosure not up to ReadyNas standards but still good.

• Access your storage @ gigabit speeds
• Disk Mirroring ensures valuable data will not be lost
• Network storage appears as a letter drive on your PCs (requires internal IP addy per share)
• Continue to upgrade your storage capacity easily
• Advanced backup and synchronization software from SmartSync™ is included (x32 os only)

This would be good for those after a basic NAS that have sufficient technical knowledge as despite the Trusted Reviews rating of 7/10 in 2007, this product has some shortcomings (i.e. no x64 support) - but I suggest you read the amazon user reviews (see my 1st post below)

It usually helps when posting to a forum if you can explain your comments. Especially for those who may consider purchasing or not depending on what others say.

from one of the Amazon's review:

the unit is not a NAS (Network Attached Storage), but a SAN. This requires drivers that Netgear have provided but only for Windows 2000 or XP. The device does not support NFS, SAMBA, FTP or any other method of connectivity. This also means that for every PC or Laptop that you have, you will have to install the Netgear Storage Central software to be able to access the unit.

And it appears that should this unit fail, the hard drives cannot be put in to a pc for file retrieval but would need to be put in another one of these.

I've used one of these before and confirm with the above statement, they can be a real nightmare to use and configure..

Puzzled about the price of £38.99. Coming up as £49.99 for me. None of the discount codes apply to this, do they?

I don't think you can take out the drive from ANY NAS and put it into a PC and expect it to operate, can you? Certainly not the ReadyNAS anyway

It depends how the discs were set up in the nas as to how difficult it is with software to recover data

It is now sold out @ Play.com and a Play seller is now selling one at £50 (which a somewhat more risky purchase regarding after sales support)
