Oh my chr1st.

Please search for the last time the stora came up to see my feelings on STORA being the 5th horse turd of the apocolypse.

Good deal though, just a terrible shame that hell had a load of lament configeration boxes left after the bad press they got from the film Hellraiser and decided to to stick a hard drive in it and try to pass it off as 'a lovely NAS for everyone who doesn't want to worry about networks and setup and things. And service. And product. And useability. And Stability. And software......etc'

The hardware equivalent of being punched in the kidneys every 10 minutes until you give up and use it to hold open a door.

'Our survey says.........nil points!'

Still a good deal though and no mistake...
...if you are a masochist and you hate yourself, or possibly if you got away with a terrible crime and feel you simply must be punished in some way. It would have to be a terrible crime though.

Deal must be seperated from product as there will be people out there who will buy this regardless. Heat added.

I might be wrong - but reading between the lines - you think its not the best deal in the world - right???

I have never used one, but there is a fairly decent review of this here (1tb model)

Just read your review on the prev post.
LMAO. Very informative while being amusing.

It this rate maybe this unit will be 50 quid in a few weeks time.
Missus bought a doorstop for not much less than that a few months back (!!), so maybe I'll dig deep at that point and buy me a second.

2.7 out of 5 - Average at best I would say.
In addition a lot of reviewers don't have to live with the items long term, so don't see the daily pain Blacklodge has.

Can you suggest an alternative at this price point ?

Computer shooper did a review of NAS enclosure and devices in their June 2010 issue (yes June issue)

The Synology DS110J (single disk enclosure) was a best buy. Hard disk not included

http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/network-storage/277309/synology-ds110j

Two others were also best buys, but were much more expensive.

Allow me to get 'down with the kids...'

I ain't no 'playa hata' save up a little more and get a netgear ReadyNAS - its £50 more, but worth every penny compared to this skulking nightmare.

yeahhh boyyeeeee! or something.

really? what exactly went wrong with yours?

there are a fair few +ve reviews out there so one might be lead to think that you are in fact player hating.

Everyone knows that you dont hate the player, hate the game!!!

ok - if you want a full story - go to the Stora forums which are filled with people basically saying wtf? THIS ISN'T EVEN FINISHED - ITS A BAD STUDENT PROJECT

Stora Hateline

Do not believe the positive spin on the first page, they have attempted to fill the landing page with positive Stickies to force the outrage of the actual forum posts to page 2 where they are less immediately embarassing. They ran out of positives a bit early though and have since resorted to 'pictures of my Stora wearing a funny hat' style posts. 'I love my stora' post is obviously written by Gary Stora himself and 'Stora in the press' is almost embarassed of its own existance content.

Stora is a 3rd party piece of hardware which is licensed by Netgear. I really like netgear, but I found this has non of the robustness in terms of product or after sales.

Its basically a NAS which thinks you are an idiot. It has a flash interface which cripples most media functions like playing video and you have to log into it by going online - even if it is sat on your desk and connected directly to your PC.

transfering data is ball-saggingly slow. I mean lame snail slow. Even the support team directed me to 3rd party software for data transfer. A gig took about 8 hours.

I have 4 months of hate for this machine, but in the interest of brevity and dealing with fact -
1. it has no capacity for functioning as 'Just a bunch of Disks' and only supports mirrored RAID

2. the disk is formatted in a specialised linux form which means you cannot ever use the disks ourside the Stora. If the hardware dies, you are not going to see your files again.

3. They gave my serial number to someone else, which meant I couldn't access it for a month. They did this to an unspecified number of users where they put the same serial on a number of boxes. No idea how this happened, but it only stopped working after a month (giving me loads of time to very slowly stuff it with my most precious family photos etc.) and I had to get a whole new serial, then delete everything and start again (I bought this for security and backup - see the issue?)

4. I have to restart it at least once a day for it to be recognised

5. I bought it to share pictures and home movies with family around the world - for that I could tolerate the web login. According to Stora home page - its not there. The loudly growling box on my desk is just a terrible waking dream only I can see.

6. It comes with a 'lite' version of the software you use to interact with it. If you want to ge tthe full functionality, you have to spend £30 a year subscription. FOR EVER.

7. Customer support line is a premium rate call to the US and you are on hold for at least an hour before getting a human. This human appears to be a rather happy chap who is always there night and day whatever time, leading me to believe the supportline is based in his parents basement. He appears to be permanently 'dazed' and says things to me like 'don't tell anyone, but they really f****d this thing up' and 'I'd complain if I was you' to me as I am complaining and telling him the Stora is 'f****d' up. He knows a suprising amount about late night television and enjoys saying 'wow' a lot though.

8. Its a vile hateful puss-box made by satan from a solid block of aged poison

If anyone would like anything else hating, please drop me a line. You can check back in previous posts for my attempts to ward off other potential victims. Whenever I read the word 'STORA' on HUKD I am compelled to try to guide people away to safety, before they are crushed against the metaphorical rocks like a handsome lighthouse. I hope that helps.

have some rep, blacklodge.

I secretly suspect Blacklodge is chair of a rival product.
Either that, or there is more to this story; something really sordid and murky indeed.
There is just too much personal vibe in the tale for this to be a mere dislike of the product.

Please reveal the full picture Blacklodge! what are you hiding?

I hate it so much.
It lost 10 years worth of porn - I mean treasured family memories, and pictures of kittens and that.
Lovely naked kittens....
