Actually NUS card holders only get 5% off on books, music and DVDs so this is excluded.

any usb wifi adapter gets hot thats why your not supposed to have them in very enclosed places i have mine at the front of my pc i mean they arnt that much of an eye-sore and just be careful you dont knock it.
#6
Will this work with an iMac?
#7
guys, I've got two of this horrid things.. Dont buy them, neargear drivers are few and farbetween. They are highly prone to dropping, forget about 64bit support...

One to miss
#8
Agreed, lousy bit of hardware.
#9
i have one of these at home - be careful if you've got an amd processor and not an intel one, because there appears to be a problem with randomly freezing your computer up. if you do a google search for it, it's pretty common, and i certainly had an issue with it.
#10
I also agree, i had two of these, both lasted less than a year and if youre running XP with multiple signons, it can corrupt your signon process so that you have to download a registry fix from t'web. XP_FixLogon, wouldnt touch them with a bargepole ....voted Cold.

having said that ive now got two railink (RL73?) ones which constantly drop out.Rubbish....can anyone reccommend a good one?

Its correct that all adaptors get hot but the Netgear one in particular gets so hot that the processor cannot handle the heat so it cuts out. Sometimes it wont come on even after it's fully cooled down. I took the case off mine to let more air in and it still got too hot. My Belkin one has never dropped. Seriously this is a bad buy.

I also have personal experience of this adaptor and it is pretty bad.
1) It has terrible range (considering that it's supposed to be MIMO)
2) it gets very hot which causes PC instability (heat travels through the metal USB connector onto the motherboard)
3) Even when not overheating it constantly drops connection.

Mine came in a bundle with a Netgear MIMO router, which works flawlessly. Don't buy this product!

I also suffered the AMD processor issue reported by thingonaspring (my favourite C= 64 game!)

can anyone recommend a good one then?

Paid £17 for one of these from a shop in town (emergency) a few months ago. It's not that great in terms of performance, but this is the cheapest around.

Hot.

Makes a mockery of microsoft charging £40+ for the 360 wireless adaptor.

Hi all. It looks like this isn't a very good buy, but my Q is - Can this or a similar one which doesn't overheat , be used for a Wii ?

but the Wii has Wifi built in :?:

I think he means to connect Ad-hoc? And if so, then yes. The easiest way is to buy the official Nintendo USB dongle but I'm not sure if it can be used with non-nintendo devices. I'm almost certain you can do it with any other usb adaptor if you know what you're doing.

I also had one of these and I really wouldn't recommend it. It was so bad that it made me give up on wifi.

for the same price, get this edimaz ew-7318usg
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/3477978/Edimax-EW-7318USG-WiFi-USB-Turbo-Wireless-Adaptor-4Dbi/Product.html
got one the other day, takes 5 mins to install and it gets a really good signal. way better than the netgear.

i had like 3 of these netgear adapters and all failed on me. even the netgear router failed kept dropping connection. i now have linksys router and adapter and no problems whatsoever

i would buy the linksys adapter as i feel they are more reliable 5 months and still running and YES it will work with a netgear router if yo have

Oh noes the Negative Brigade have landed.
I've had a Netgear router that kept dropping signals since day one but after 6 months it was fine. I also brought this adapter from Argos (£30 at that time) and so far it's been great, I've had it for two years. However, sometimes I have to reinsert it to sync it with my router.

I have one of these and it is absolutely fine!

Can also back up claims these overheat. Had GT 108mbps version and that was rubbish too. Wireless access points are the way forward.

I know - I am a complete technophobe when it comes to these things !! I presently have a Netgear card that slots into my (older type) laptop and a Netgear USB adapter in my desktop. These have been okay - if a little tempremental. For example security issues mean I am unable to download Microsoft's Service Pack 2 as my present wireless connection will not work when I download SP2.

If I bought this item

a) could I just replace the adapter in my desktop with this and away I go or would I

b) ned to buy something additional for my laptop

Sorry - I know - like I say 'technophobe' :-)

Many Thanks,

Jim.

This is so strange... My boyf got given an older laptop this week and I set it up (he's bit dim when it comes to these things) with one of these about an hour ago. I got mine with the Netgear router that I bought to go with my laptop with built in WiFi and thought I would have to buy a WiFi card for his but I remembered I had this and it installed VERY quickly, very easy. No problems and is running like a dream. Using it now just to prove a point LOL x x x
