this is the same as the 2nd gen model, its just that the ipod touch is in its '3rd gen' now so retailers seemed to have stuck it on the end for all current models. as you say the only ones with the upgraded technology (ram and cpu etc.) are the 32gb and 64gb touches

Agree, it's the 2nd gen but AFAIK the 32 and 64 3rd gen don't have a camera although I understand it was planned but pulled just prior to production.

OK, a lot of gobbledy-gook above for me, I basically want to know whether this, or rather the Currys price quoted by linda turnock is a good price. My husband wants one for Xmas but I don't know the first thing about 2g/3g etc etc or what I should be spending, just want a good Ipod touch for him without spending a fortune so can you let me know if this is a good buy please.

You only get the itunes card if you collect from store in which case it would be 149 not 139

"Free £15 iTunes Gift Card & Charger. Offer only available in store & for Reserve & Collect"

If you buy from Apple store - using this link http://promo.euro.apple.com/epp/youatwork/uk/

Its £140 and you can get it engraved for free.

As far as deals go its nearly impossible to get big discounts on the rrp of apple products but £140 with engraving is pretty good for a Christmas pressie if you want to add that personal touch

As long as you then don't get your voucher withdrawn - bit of a gamble.

Can I check. I need a peronal organiser replacement for my Palm device. It needs to sync to my PC and have wifi access to the internet. I do not need a phone. Will this do the trick?

Sorry if this is a question that every teenager knows the answer to. I'm not a teenager.

What's the difference betwene 1st Gen and 2nd Gen? Can you tell them apart?

(btw, I do know the 8Gb one in the deal is a 2nd Gen.)

Edit: found the answer. 2nd gen has volume controls and a mike. 1st gen has a better screen. 3rd gen superior in all respects, but still no compass or camera like the iPhone 3GS has.

Ok, teen and nerd here, let me clear a few things up for those considering this:

First of all, there ARE 2nd and 3rd Gen versions, however they are almost exactly the same, except for model numbers and a few other minor differences (which mean that this device cannot be jailbroken — if you don't know what jailbreaking is, don't worry about this).

There is no 16GB 3rd Gen iPT. They discontinued the 16GB and replaced it with the 64GB.
The lineup is:
2G — 8/16/32GB
3G — 8GB / 32/64GB
The 3G's 32 and 64GB have faster internals, but I would say that it isn't really that noticeable, and advise against buying a 32GB for the speed if you could easily cope with 8GB of space.

On a related note, remember that you will receive slightly less free space on your iPod due to the firmware and apps which are installed on your Touch. So if you have 7.9GB of music, and you want ALL of it on your Touch at once, you won't be able to do this with an 8GB device.

This will work as a personal organiser, and although it's better if you have a Mac to use with this, it will work with a PC just fine.
However, I wouldn't recommend buying one to use as a personal organiser considering there are many other better dedicated devices for such things, like Blackberries or even Palms.

There is no camera in ANY version of ANY iPod except the iPod Nano 5th Gen.
Neither is there an inbuilt microphone in any iPod.
There is no voice control on the 8GB 2/3G, though, unless you're blind, I don't think this is really a very useful feature. I use it sparingly and have to make sure nobody is around so I don't look like a plonker talking to myself. When I do use it, sometimes it gives accurate results, other times... well, you may as well have gone through the menus.
There is voice control on the 32/64GB 3G, but as I say, no internal mic. Apple is kind enough to supply you with a pair of headphones which have a mic and three buttons halfway up the cord though. (I do quite like this).

The iPod Touch has Wifi and Bluetooth (and a chip which can handle Radio, but Apple haven't activated this chip yet (i.e. you can't listen to radio on the Touch — yet)), but no EDGE or 3G obviously.
This means you need to be connected to a Wifi network in order to access the internet on a Touch.

I'm happy to answer any other questions too.

Yes , 2nd gen models can be jailbroken.

Currently a jailbreaking tool called "blackra1n" can be used to ajilbreak 32gb and 64gb ipod touch 3g, but not for 3g 8g yet.

No GPS.
No air syncing (wireless syncing). You need to use the USB cable.
Only iPod Touch which can't be jailbroken at the minute is the 8GB 3G.

Jailbreaking can allow you to get (most) apps and games for free, but, of course, that's illegal. A lot of people use jailbreaking for customising and theming their iPod. There are also perfectly legal free apps from unofficial 'App Stores' like Cydia's repository of apps. These apps are made by users, for users, and don't have any restrictions set upon them by Apple, so they're often pretty helpful.

Sorry for the slow reply, and thanks to Zaft for filling in.

Oh, and just a little personal footnote: I was considering buying an 8GB 2G for ~£149 from Amazon just three or four months ago, so in my opinion this is a pretty good deal.
#32
I looked at using this for a PDA, but I don't think I've seen a good To Do List application for it.
#33
There are some good To Do apps for the Touch.
I use 'To Do' which syncs nicely for me with OS X's Calendar repository (meaning my iPod and Macs' To Do lists are nicely synced and up to date.

But like I say, I wouldn't buy it purely for PDA usage unless you also want music, wifi web browsing, third party apps, etc. etc., as there are better devices out there.
#34
I bought IPT 8gb from HMV today thinking I was getting a 3rd gen model but googled model no. and came back as 2nd gen.

Called Apple store and asked why HMV sold me a 2nd gen instead of a 3rd. He said there is no 3rd gen ipod out yet it is just a software upgrade although the 32gb and 64 gb are new models they are not 3rd gen! I said this must be mis -selling but he said Apple do not advertise them as 3rd gen.

I am confused.
