Need a new laptop for my mum, and seems decent... Just never sure on Asus as a decent brand.

Thoughts?

For laptops, Asus and Acer are the top brands you can get. The build quality and materials used are amazing for the price.

I've never used an Asus laptop but their products in general are solid. Acer on the other hand are a truly horrible brand with very poor components throughout. You'll be lucky to get 2 years max out of any of their products. Why do you think their products are consistently the cheapest around & always have been. Golden rule of I.T. is always stay clear of Acer!!

Is this definitely an i5 laptop?

Yes, bought this yesterday and it is a i5 3317u clocked at 1.7ghz with turbo of 2.6ghz. It is a dual core processor with 4 threads so it actually reads as a quad core.

No, quad core with hyper threading has 8 threads as I have i7 quad core and during bursting all 8 threads peak at 100% CPU. A core is not the same as thread. A dual core is still dual core though it can have 2 threads or 4 threads depending if it has hyper threading.

Looks similar to ultra book S50 bought for £349 but returned it bcoz of spacebar issue (model specific) see other thread so be careful. other than spacebar issue it's brilliant

Looks good but can someone confirm whether or not W8 is actually installed. Some reviews on Argos site give the impression that it isn't so do we assume W7 is loaded with W8 on disc or something? TVM.

Top brands are Sony, Apple and maybe Toshiba.

For anyone buying this, some Halifax/Lloyds debit cards are offering 5% and 8% cashback. My HX is offering 5% but my wifes Lloyds is offering 8%.

Also, TCB are paying 3.03%. Quidco only 1.5%.

Hmmm, the deal is for the laptop as it is, why say it is cold because it is not something else?

I see Staples has their Toshiba c55 bundle deal back in stock for £399

I got this couple of months ago, very good, and most recent i5 processor (4200M), and its an M, not a U which is better for power, AFAIK)

The accessories aint bad, but if you try to buy it without them its £50 more !

Just read the comments on the other ASUS deal and there appears to be a lot of issues with the spacebar.

Asus lappys are good, don't think Acer are up there.
Wouldn't have Toshiba up there either and don't get me started on HP Compaq.

I would agree with that. I think it is unfortunate that people think Asus and Acer are the same - probably because they both begin with an 'A'.

Don't forget that Asus really kick started the whole portable segment with the EeePC and that was a big influencing factor in the rise of the tablet and eventually the iPad.

I have owned dozens of laptops over the last 20 years and the two best brands I have used are probably Lenovo (and IBM before it) and Asus.

Acer on the other hand - avoid.

Looks like a good laptop, according to Amazon this has been out since late 2012, is this therefore an old design I5?

Why the Acer hate? I work in a Primary school and we have Acers up to 7 years old still in perfect working order, including most which have the original batteries. The laptops have been used and abused by teachers and children but keep running no problem. I know some newer models are a little flimsier but not that bad.

I think Asus used to make MacBooks for Apple back in the days when they were made of white plastic.

What he means is it shows as 4 processors in device manager, he is correct though it's two physical cores and two logical cores. So dual core with HT which shows up as 4 processors in device manager, even though they're not four physical cores :)

15% really? (_;)

It will be fine for the vast majority of users. Can you find a 4th gen i5 for this price then?

Schools & other public sector companies generally will go for Acer products because the IT equipment is government funded so they're provided with the cheapest stuff & repairs/replacements etc are also funded. However you will notice there is not a single I.T. company that will buy or recommend Acer products despite the initial cost saving because the long term cost is far higher with repairs & troubleshooting time. The physical components/capacitors etc inside are horrible, cheap crap, generally saved for Japanese knock-off equipment.

My Packard Bell laptop, built by Acer is three years old and running strong, and it stays on 18 hours a day. My old Asus laptop didn't last that long (broken screen hinges, loose fan).

I don't believe there's a huge gap in quality between brands at the moment to be honest. They've all run the race to the bottom and it's more about luck if you get a lemon than anything else.

not a bad deal. Asus are a good brand, I have a Google Nexus 7 2013 tablet made by Asus and the build quality is superb. their graphics cards are also superb which is why you pay a little more for an Asus card. I'm sure this laptop will be excellent quality and because of the low power processor model you could probably squeeze 8 hours out of the battery after sticking an SSD in it. very tempted by this, heat added

Seeing as I'm the one maintaining these particular laptops I can tell you in the last 3 years I've replaced 1 screen and hard drive( after a teacher dropped the laptop), 1 charger and scrapped 2 because of damaged power sockets. That out of a stable of over 30 machines is pretty good. I've had far more problems in previous schools with so called 'business' laptops from HP,
The components inside and on the motherboard in most computers all come from the same few manufacturers, Intel, Ralink, Broadcom etc, and the Japanese have been making the best consumer electronics for the last 50 years. Hardly cheap crap.

+1 bought an acer laptop once, screen broke in the first year, and acer refused to fix it so i had to buy the inverter and fix it myself. on the other hand i have a a toshiba and a sony laptop, both which have passed their 5th birthday and still running perfectly. In my opinion with most technologies, i stick with the Japanese, including cars (Toyota).
