Nichols unveils plan to launch cherry-flavoured Vimto
Nichols Plc (AIM: NICL) is to launch a cherry-flavoured Vimto next month as a permanent addition to its product range.
It will be the first time other than one-off specials that the drink has been produced in other than its regular flavour since production began in 1908.
A carbonated version of cherry Vimto will launch next month with a cordial following in May.
The Haydock-based company believes there is massive growth potential" for cherry-flavoured soft drinks, with growth of 142 per cent during 2009. Most of this was in southern England, where the Vimto brand is not as strong as in its northern heartland.
Consumer research on the product produced the best results it has ever seen. Nichols added.
Vimto is made from grape, blackcurrant and raspberry juice with a secret ingredient made from 26 herbs and spices.
Nichols spokeswoman Emma Hunt said the new flavour had exactly the same ingredients with the addition of cherry. It tastes like cherry and also tastes like Vimto, she added.
The new flavour is part of a five-year programme of new product development designed to stretch the Vimto brand.
Vimto Soft Drinks' head of marketing, Neil Gibson, said: The response to Cherry Vimto in our research was staggering and this, backed up with the growth opportunity the flavour has in the market, gave us the confidence to take it to trade.
Research firm Ashdown sampled 500 consumers in June 2009 and 86 per cent of teens and 89 per cent of adults said they were likely to buy Cherry Vimto, with 9 out of 10 teens and adults rating the taste "good" or "very good".
