sadly i was expecting better spec, maybe we all were they seem overpriced compared to the 'older' models!

No XP, and a 128Mb Intergrated G/Card? =\
#11
Exactly what i am thinking, these models are well over priced.

FYI:
this new model is more expensive because it has the newest technology, and you pay a premium for that as you know!
What has improved:
* Integrated Intel Graphic Media Accelerator X3100: much faster than the previous solution (Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950)
* Newest Intel CPU (T5250): upgrade to T7100 if you have the $$$

Hope this info helps!

When it comes to laptop upgrades you have very few options; for example you cannot upgrade to a better GPU or CPU, which is what you get with this laptop. You can add more memory, change the hard drive/dvd burner, but that's about it! ;-)

Any idea on the increased performance you get with the T7100 santa rosa, pretty please:)
Read a little about the X3100 and seems pretty good- though not for dedicated gamers- before I get shot down:roll:

Performance wise on the santa rosa there is a slight performance increase, 800mhz bus instead of 667 although i would imagine we would have to wait for 800mhz ram to really see more - performance wise, 800mhz ram costs an arm and a leg atm. The new chipset is suppose to be more energy efficient aswell and introduce intel readydrive, although I dont see this available with any manuafacturer yet (plus apparently readydrive is rubbish anyway)...

X3100 seemed to perform 50% better than 950, good intergrated part - i m thinking its an Intel part that FINALLY supports hardware texture lighting etc spec but cant remember lol... still not for dedicated gaming though! :giggle:

What is ready drive anyway?

Actually you can upgrade the CPU on nearly all laptops (if you have some technical abilities of course). Just need to remove the keyboard, and you'll have access to the ZIP slot.
I upgraded my compaq which had a pentium dual core to a Core2Duo T7200, upgraded my ram and fitted a 7200rpm hard drive for under £200. I bet its just as quick as the best system out now.

Upgrading the GPU on the other hand is nearly impossible.
#20
So in theory i can buy a really cheap £300 laptop and upgrade the CPU myself? Is this only possible if i have a ZIP slot on the laptop or do all laptops have ZIP slots?

In theory yes...but

alot of laptops, especailly lower end ones have cpu/mobo combinations where the cpu is matched to the mobo and has the fastest cpu the mobo can take, or in other words the mobo is minimun spec for a given cpu.

So check the mobo in the laptop first a check what cpu's it can take.

Also bear in mind that cpu cooling is critical in a laptop, so the coller may be sized to suit a certain cpu, and putting a larger cpu in will require a larger cooler which may not be available or fit in the laptop anyway.

On the critical cooling note, if you do upgrade the cpu, then make sure you use a good thermal paste like artic silver or such like or the cpu will get too hot

HTH

Oh ok but excuse my noobness but what is a mobo?

Also TejS what compaq laptop did you have in the first place?

Specs for wifi doesnt include the new 802.11 n. Which gives a far better coverage.
#25
My daughter only wants the new ones because of the colour

Been on the phone to dell and best offer so far :

1720 with 12 month gtee
truelife screen
blue case - not my choice!
2 gb ram
vista home premium
dell mouse

Would`nt give me a single stick of 1gb ram, instead of standard 2 x 512, as I had hoped to pick up 1 gb ram cheaper, could flog the 512 on ebay I suppose.

any thoughts on above?

want a 17 inch screen as it probably won`t leave the house much and think the X3100 graphics will be ok as kids have an xbox 360 for games - as I keep telling them:roll:

Vale what price did they offer you

Hi, I'm just looking to buy 1720 this afternoon, never dealt with Dell before but seems like a very good deal.

I've just built the system online but was wondering if i can ring them up and haggle on the phone.

What can I ask for? Discount freebie? Or maybe it may be better to buy it online and get 4.5% cashback from quidco?

My lappy came to £980 btw

Thanks for any advice it would be really appreciated.
[mod]#31
Well I would be wary of building a spec for £980 without checking if its cheaper by using another ecode to get the deal cheaper. Also its Dell update day tomorrow so they may have some better deals, of course it could also go the other way and be worse.
Why not list your spec so we can see if its cheaper another way.
If you do buy today and the deals are better tomorrow there is nothing to stop you cancelling the order and starting over.
#32
Yeah thats what I was thinking I could always cancel it tomorrow because today is the last current offers day.
I've chosen the following specs:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 Processor (2.0GHz,800MHz,4MB L2 cache)
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium – English
Ruby Red Colour with Microsatin Finish & 2.0mp camera
LCD17.0" Widescreen WXGA+ (1440x900) TFT Display with TrueLife™
2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]
160GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive
® GeForce™ Go 8600M GT with 256MB DDR2 dedicated graphic memory
Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive including Software
Primary 6-cell Lithium-Ion Battery (56 WHr)
DELL PRINTERSFree - Dell™ Photo All in One Printer 926

£980 - free delivery £60 + £90 off included in the deal.

Plus around £45 quidco.

So is it worth phoning them and haggling?
#34
Wow, thanks but i get this

We're sorry, but we are unable to process your request to configure the identified product

Config'd as yours it comes out £980 still , I really dont know how I made it cheaper before. I went through trying to config all the available ecodes, cant get it cheaper unless you go for a Vostro 17" laptop
#38
Ok thanks, for your help anyway I think it's a good deal anyway we'll see if they change their offers tomorrow.
#39
