So badly going to be getting one of these.

Looks like a very nice phone. Good to see healthy competition between HTC and Apple
#5
But have they sorted out the crap battery life - that's one of the few things that hasn't changed with phones over the years...

Well according to official figures, the battery life on this for talk time is 9 hours. Whereas the figure for the original desire from the same source is 6.5 hours. So clearly, they've improved something as the battery on this is actually smaller than that of the original desire.

Sighs... and I thought that would be fixed in froyo :(

And why is this now going cold? And yet the Desire HD is up at 150 degrees?

Oh wow! Very nice! Shame no tilt or 4 row keyboard like my Touch Pro 2 but great to see this format come to Android (apart from the awful G1).

Battery life on these devices is always poor as we are always tapping the screen to check emails, send texts, read the news...oh and maybe make a call!! Push email, GPS, Wife all take their toll. I switched the push email and Wifi off on my Touch Pro 2 and set it to 2G only and the battery lasted over 2 days with me still making calls and downloading email headers every now and then.

Dont you mean 5 row keyboard??

my touch pro 2 seems to be getting worse... mine is fully charged at 9am and dead by 4:30pm. I dont use the bluetooth or music player..

Am I right in surmising this model has a single (mono) speaker and that the Desire HD will be the only handset to boast stereo speakers?
#11
what's the point of stereo speakers that are closer together than your ears?

If this model has one decent speaker, that'll be an improvement on the Desire. That and its battery life are the only major flaws, IMHO.

Well, the Desire HD promises virtual surround. It would be nice to see this integrated into the 'Z' too or as you say, a better speaker at the very least!

My wait is finally over.
Now, just need a contract to go with it.

I got to play with this at the free HTC event in London last night. It's very nice I would tell you all more but they also had free beer so my memories are a bit blurry today :-)

If your after a contract then I hear the T-Mobile £10pm 100mins, 100texts, unlimited data (using the flexible booster) is the one to go for assuming your like me and don't really use your phone for calling people. Best thing is it's a rolling 30 day contract so if something better comes along you can leave. Also remember that T-Mobile and Orange are actively merging their masts (voice calls first, data later) so I expect reception / capacity will improve on over the coming 6+ months.

Hmm, i'd want a contract with the phone. Otherwise, I think currently giffgaff is a better deal with their "goodybags". For £10 you get 150 mins + [truly] unlimited text and web (and free 0800 calls).

Probably cause of the price, as this is pretty much retail. Also, this was on Play.com for £409.99 a couple of days ago.
#18
What do you think these actually cost to make? £42.99?

To physically make it, you be talking a few pounds most likely.

Like everything these days, you pay for the brand and the time investing in researching and patenting it etc.

This phone is awesome, great alternative to the iphone

It's NOT an upgrade. It's 'sign up to a new contract and we'll give/sell you a new phone'.

An upgrade is how bucket class people get to fly in comfort. The same language is used to make you feel 'special'.
#22
stuff.tv reviewed it and they said the keyboard is fragile.
#23
this is about 20-30g heavier than the new HD which is aboout 20-30g heavier than the iphone 4
(see my comments on the Desire HD post for more details)
#24
Desire HD is going to be £459, so other than a physical keyboard, i cant see many reasons why someone would buy this over the HD
#25
htc as become the iphone eater,
#26
Slower CPU than the original Desire probably helps the battery life.

Same price at Amazon and I'd much, MUCH rather deal with them than Play.

It's not slower than the Desire. Z has the 2nd generation scorpion processor. Original Desire has the 1st gen.
It's probably underclocked at 800Mhz to save battery life.
#28
I meant it being a slower clock, not necessarily worse performance. Being a newer chip probably makes it a little more power efficient too.

htc as become the iphone eater,

Once they manage to make their phones more compact, the iPhone market will slowly start to dwindle. Not by much though, as a lot of people buy them due to the high resale value, which most other phones lose after a few months.

Euh? Isn't it the whole point of this phone. This is essentially an HTC DEsire but with the benefit of a physical keyboard. Of course, if you don't consider a physical keyboard a good thing, there's absolutely no point nin this phone. ?!?

Like the Mini car then? Once the hype is over, prices dip to the same level as other products.

HTC Desire is truly a godly phone. Absolutely love it!
#33
ffs! my rather new Desire is already outdated.. I always said the Desire would be fully perfect if it had a qwerty keyboard! Just a shame it doesn't have the 1ghz snapdragon processor - Why would they get rid of it?!

Doubt it, the most important thing for them is to make it slim, they are scared to put in a bigger battery. What's so smart about a phone that will only last a day and a half!
#35
Ordered, 3.5% on Quidco too.
#36
why is this hot? same price at Amazon....no bargain here then. it's not "vote hot if you like the phone"

Cold for deal.

They've replaced it with a better one.
