The New Orange San Diego £179.99 + £10 top-up on PAYG (Orange) + £45 Quidco! £189.99
UPDATE #2: Quidco says "Free internet for a year when you top up £10 on the San Diego & save £20 on the handset + cashback increased to an exclusive £45 at Orange Pay As You Go "
This my first HotUKDeal but I'm going to dispense with the normal copy & paste of marketing fluff.
If you're reading this then you already know about the Orange San Diego phone. Previously only available for £199.99 + £10 top-up (or free on a £15.50 contract)
Just noticed this morning that Orange has dropped this to £179.99 on PAYG.
For anyone who hasn't read the review yet, I have to disclose that:
a) There is still no SIM-unlock available for this handset, so you can only use Orange or T-Mobile micro SIMs
b) There is still no root hack available, so anyone hoping to run custom ROMs etc should steer clear.
For everyone else, this is an awesome mid-priced phone with high-end specifications. The Intel CPU is lightning fast and the high-resolution LCD display is gorgeous. It is thin and light, and the battery lasts ages.
UPDATE - full specs, as requested

Jump to unread Post a CommentIn basic bouncing around Android, my San Diego is faster than my 1.2GHz, quad-core Nexus 7 even though the latter is running Jelly Bean and the OSD is "only" Gingerbread.
Android multi-core threading just isn't very good. But thanks for the uninformed coldness.:|

I can also report that there is NO micro SD expansion. You get 16GB as standard, which is lots more than the 4GB / 8GB that phones in this price range get, but it does mean you can't slap a 32GB SD card in it either.
guys at modaco are hard at work to root this device but as the intel boot loader is new it's proving difficult.
Are there any benchmarks for comparing the speed of this and more mainstream processors?
No card is a pain, as if the phone is dropped badly, any pictures taken and not yet off loaded are lost (so generally your entire holiday until its dropped).
Has anyone actually managed to activate the card slot yet?
2) Benchmarks: http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/31/orange-san-diego-benchmarks/
3) No active card slot (and even access to it requires some disassembly. This phone does not have a regular, removable battery cover)
The toolchain for standard ARM will not work on these phones as they lack an ARM CPU so there is not much support for modding or custom roms.
Video review on Modaco.
Who's going to even contemplate developing a rom for a device that cannot be flashed with any such rom, at present?
A truly fantastic value phone if you can live with Orange or T-mobile.
Unless Orange/Intel address the 'hackability' of this phone I wouldn't be surprised if the price regularly drops over the coming months.
It's a shame as this could have sold in huge numbers: unbeatable technical specification for the price.
It goes to show how much the operators make from selling air time as Orange clearly intend to force San Diego owners to stick with their network.
If you're thinking of buying this phone with a view to Orange giving you an unlock code after their qualifying period (typically 3 months) then get some actionable assurance from them before purchase as I wouldn't be surprised if they fail to deliver when the time comes.
