Maybe I can clear a few things up as I've been working with, researching and testing thermal kit and image intensifiers for years. Tiny C - these are image intensifiers (night vision) not thermal they won't show any heat signature.
At this price they are definately not capable of giving the images shown in the little circles on the link, just look at the depth of field on the picture with the deer that is a normal photo that has been photoshopped to a green palette. They are a good toy but are about £3k too cheap to be anything very capable.
Olliehayman - Its a Gilly suit, you can make one quite easily if you want one, basically just an overall with lots of fabric hanging off, decide where you want to hide and pick a fabric to match..........most fun to be had with a floral pattern, hiding in Laura Ashley and mugging passing middle class women.

Long shot, but does anyone know the kind of stock availability on these? Two per store or something ridiculous? Friend of mine bought one two years ago, £89, on a whim for fishing, and have to admit it was pretty impressive. I think these are made by Yukon, well known brand unlike Onkyo, and retail about £200-£250, maybe more. HOT!

Apologies for my grammatical error, I did type it quickly as I wasn't really interested.

When you pull people on grammar, please adhere to it yourself, or you'll look a fool with your 'sub machine gun'.

    Much love

Take it you mean that Onkyo aren't a well known brand in the night vision field and not just generally speaking?

Thanks for the info..do you know what generation this is? Thanks.

Bloodoaf - Good question can't really be bothered to do any research but its probably early 2nd Gen, probably some old russian tech, don't stand next to the person using it your hair will probably fall out, as its probably only radiation shielded at the back (joke...ish). It will no doubt emit a high frequency whine and if you use it near livestock they will all come and have a look at whats laying in their field.

Do you have your water temp in your heating system (on your boiler) to max? Mine was... and I couldn't believe the money I saved turning it down. Also, make your own radiator reflectors out of cardboard and tin foil - you may well be loosing some heat that way.

Thanks HappyGeorge, worth checking didn't realise it was image intensifier.

Good suggestions Thermomonkey, the 30 year old boiler is probably top of the list to reduce the bills, that and rather odd choice of running the water for upstairs radiators through a 3 foot length of pipe outdoors.(out the extension roof, up 2 feet then in through an exterior wall) It's an old house. I thought this pipe would look impressive with an IR gadget.

Is it really any good? As normally have to pay a lot more for a descent one, tried an X army one and it was like it was day light but in green.

This runs on 2 AAA batteries.. usually they have lithium ones (mine uses 123A's)

Wonder if that means its a bit underpowered or if the technology has just moved on.. might be worth trying to find out.
  38. MrPuddington's avatar
I used a professional one at some point, and it can indeed be quite impressive. But I wonder what normal people would use it for?

Anyway, you can get nearly the same result by just getting your eyes used to the dark for a few minutes. The really good devices may be 10 times more sensitive than the naked eye (mostly because of the lens, the quantum efficiency of the eye is already pretty good), but 10 times is not as much of a difference as it sounds.
