Best Entry Level Lens of TIPA Award 2007

Nikon Inc. introduced the new 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor lens - a new compact telephoto zoom Nikkor lens that offers Nikon’s exclusive Vibration Reduction technology in a high-powered 3.6x zoom lens. Engineered exclusively for use with Nikon’s DX format digital SLR cameras, including the D80, D40 and recently announced D40x, this new lens approximates the picture angle characteristics of an 82.5-300mm lens on a 35mm film SLR camera.

Features:

- A compact telephoto zoom lens featuring VR and SWM at an affordable price
- Vibration Reduction offers the equivalent of shutter speeds 3 stops faster
- A wide 55-200mm (picture angle equivalent to 82.5-300mm lens in the 35mm format)
- 3.6x zoom range offers high quality images
- An ED glass element helps minimize chromatic aberration
- The ED glass element provides superior contrast and higher resolution
- Compact SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for quiet autofocusing
- Optical performance highly complements Nikon digital SLR cameras

Accessories included
- 52mm Snap-on front lens cap (LC-52)
- Rear lens cap (LF-1)
- Bayonet hood (HB-37)

awesome lens for the money.

Always there or thereabouts at amazon. I know where I'd rather shop.

£144.99 inclusive postage. You can get the same lens for the same price in many places including amazon marketplace, where you get amazon shopping guarantee.

This is an older lens (from 2007) but is quite good according to review below:

Bought from Amazon for £149 (the VR version, before you say anything.. and it's worth it :)

what about WARRANTY? is it a grey-import 1yr? or proper UK 5yr?

Jessops and warehouse express sell for £230

You can findi t in Camerabox for the same reduced price, but not sure about after-sale service...

Thom's reviews are always worth reading.

This is a grey import - the same as those sold on the Amazon marketplace and elsewhere. No problem other than the guarantee and for cheaper lenses like this one not much of a risk. This is the standard price for a grey import - usually available somewhere for around £140. I would avoid Camerabox - Purely Gadgets are OK unless something goes wrong... if you buy from an Amazon marketplace seller you have a little more protection.

It is an ideal lens to take candid portraits of children but not really long enough or fast enough for nature or sports photography.

The best option is a telephoto lens - the 300mm f/2.8 ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR costs a bit less than £4k and has everything you need.

More realistically the 80 - 400 VR Zoom is a bit over £1k and is fine for safaris. Don't buy this as a grey import though - too risky if something goes wrong. Jessops have it.

There is a 70-300 VR for about £400 but it is not significantly better than the 55-200 VR posted here.

You'll need to be a bit more specific about your needs and budget, but you'll want a fast lens for sports photography - if a zoom, preferably something with constant aperture. What kind of sports will you be shooting, and is it indoors or outdoors?
