The Nikon Coolpix S3000 is a very well designed camera as it is very compact yet houses a 4x glass zoom lens with true wideangle, has 12 megapixel resolution and has many first rate features to assist in better picture taking. These include image stabilisation, Smart Portrait and D-lighting to rescue highlight and shadow detail.

4x Wide Angle Zoom
This optical system give sthe equivalent of 27-108mm focal length and so accommodates everything from true wideangle to medium telephoto perspectives.

4-Way VR Image Stabilisation
Uses four advanced Nikon technologies to keep your images from suffering from the effects of camera shake. These are:

Electronic VR Image Stabilisation
Motion Detection - detects fast action and raises shutter speed and ISO to freeze the action
High (3200) ISO sensitivity - Works with the above function to ensure fast shutter speeds are a possibility
Best Shot Selector - takes up to ten pictures consecutively and picks the sharpest one

Smart Portrait
Utilises the following technologies for the best portrait images:

Smile Timer and Blink Proof - Smile Timer fires when your subject smiles and Blink Proof takes 5 images and selects one with your subject's eyes open
Blink Warning
In-Camera Red-Eye Fix - before you even view the photo
Face Priority AF - Detects up to twelve faces
Skin Softening - Three strengths to choose from

EXPEED Image Processor
Tailored to imaging needs, the EXPEED processor utilises Nikon's imaging expertise and gives your images depth, vivid colour, low noise and ensures the camera electronics run efficiently.

Other Features

2.7" Anti-Glare LCD Monitor
VGA Movies at 30fps with Sound
Subject Tracking
Quick Retouch - contrast and colour saturation
Scene Auto Selector - Chooses the most appropriate scene mode for the conditions
D-Lighting - rescues shadow areas of high contrast images by bringing out detail in these areas
16 Scene Modes - tailor your pictures to the kind of scene being framed
5 Colour Effects - normal, vivid colour, black-and-white, sepia and cyanotype.

Good camera, good price, voted hot!

PS. Much better than a Vivitar! :)

Hot from me - use voucher Nikon6 to bring the price down to £74.26. Also quidco.

The recent Cannon IXUS 105/130 offers from M+S are better deals but may not be repeated.
Decent price, Argos had the green S3000 camera at £79 but it has now returned to £99.
Refurbished S3000 on Ebay have sold for as little as £40 but a more realistic price is £50+.
Reviews suggest it is a fair alternative to the Cannon IXUS105.

This camera at the time of the review could have been twice this price which I think is worth taking into consideration.
I would be genuinely interested if you could suggest a better deal, I have a budget of £75.

You've thrown down the gauntlet, but here goes.

Best Buy - Sony DSC W320 with really great review. £100
Use quidco for 5% discount and 15% cashback, bringing it down to £80.

OK, it's £5 over your budget (and you may have to wait for a few weeks for your cashback - Best Buy pays pretty quickly), but this is a cracking camera, and may I say knocks the socks off your coolpix. Read the cameras.co.uk review
