Very good value and an excellent starter DSLR. Good introduction to the world of Nikon. Heat Added.

GREAT STUFF: Been after a DSLR for a while now..... Saw the £40 Cashback offer before, but missed it! Now with that back and the EXTRA6 code and QUIDCO - it all makes sense to buy!

Need to find a decent flash, to bounce the light around a room rather than directly at the object.
#3
Great price! Especially compared to a starter dslr from Canon.
The Canon 500D is going for £500
#4
I was hoping the £40 Nikon cashback offer would return. :p

Nice one OP.

Weird that they send a prepaid visa card rather than a cheque and you can't use it in cash machines.

And they oddly aren't on the list of dealers Nikon mention on the offer details, but that's probably not a problem.

Q. Can I purchase online or do I have to go to a store?
A. Online purchases are fine but please check with your retailer that the stock you are receiving is valid for this promotion. You can check for a list of authorised dealers by going to www.nikon.co.uk/wheretobuy

Mind you Jessops don't show on the online list but do on their retail outlet finder.

Reviewed in this month's PC Advisor and given a recommended status and solid 4 stars in every category. £100 off the £450 RRP in this deal can't be bad. VERY tempted.

Just called the contact support line *number on the cashback link mentioned above and they confirmed Dixons stock is distrubuted by Nikon UK. Also if you check the "online dealers" PC World business is shown which is apart of the DSG group. So it will be ok. 8)

Yeah I saw PCWB was there which made it seem all the odder, their retail units don't come up on postcode search either, wonder if it's just a who pays to be recommended list.

Canon's starter is the 1000D, which is a comparable price to this with the 18-55mm kit lens. But this is still a great price for the Nikon.

Top find and very tempting

Heat added. Hot deal. Worth noting tho that Nikon now pay cashback using a prepaid visa card and not cheque so u won't actually get 'cash' back.
#13
Really can't decide whether to go for it - my first DSLR.

Aargh!!

That's as maybe but this wees on the 1000D from a great height. I think even Canon would prefer it to be compared to the 500D or 550D

Go to shop and handle it first. A DSLR is not right for everyone.

Just to let you know EXTRA6 code expires today 01/03/2011, not sure about the other one. So might be last chance to get that extra 6% off.

Hang on, the price of £429.99 is for body only, not including the lens. Its £452.40 for the kit with the lens.
#19
Starting price shows as £452.40 for me? When I add the code it comes down to £425.26 - is that right?
#20
They have put the price up. It was £429.99 with the lens earlier.
#21
Price has gone up!!!!! oO
#22
Damn just going through checkout as price went up!!!

Still gunna go for it even though its £22 more, still cheaper than anywhere at the moment.
#23
At the moment, £429.99 will only get you 'NIKON D3100 Digital SLR Camera - Body Only'
On the Dixons site.

Me, too. Although it is still cheaper than anywhere else, it has put me off a little.
Why did they do that?! Greed.

The good thing about a Nikon as your first DSLR is the 18-55 lens is way better than Canons. This camera gets great reviews.

Canon produce the best (imo) mid-beginner camera with the 550D but then sell it with the piece of crap 18-55mm lens.

Got this or m daughter for Christmas and she loves it.

However The £40 cashback card was a pain. My card wouldn't work at all and it took several phone calls to foreign lands to sort it out. It beacame quite embarassing when standing in a shop and trying to use it!!

Quidco tracked and validated but still no payout. (almost 3 months later), swore I'd avoid them but was tempted by the offer at the time.

If anyone wants a cheaper alternative to this deal, seeing as Dixons have greedily raised the price, you could opt for the below from Best Buy which includes a free camera bag:

Camera price: £470.00
6% Discount (use code 6CAMERA which expires 4 March): £28.20
8% Quidco: £35.34
Nikon cashback: £40.00
TOTAL (potentially): £366.46

Direct link to camera: http://www.bestbuy.co.uk/product/1000139775/nikon-d3100-18-55-vr.aspx
Direct link to free case promotion: http://www.bestbuy.co.uk/marketing/discountinformation.aspx?discountid=912&productid=1000139775&path=ccatdepartments%23%23-1%23%23-1%7e%7eccatimg%23%230%23%23pk%7e%7eccatimg002%23%230%23%23y%7e%7eccatimg002001%23%230%23%23y%7e%7enf202%7c%7c4e696b6f6e&searchkeyword=&resultpagenumber=0&categoryid=&sortby=&searchtype=attributefacet&searchresultslayout=listlayout&numberofresultsperpage=12

(Not posted as a separate deal as I don't want to be seen as spoiling this deal - I priced this deal up after I saw the Dixons deal this morning to see if it worked out cheaper which it now does as the greedy buggers at Dixons have raised their price!)

i tried using the 6CAMERA code on a D90, but it doesn't work. It's for Digital Cameras, any one tried it?

Just tested and looks like they have locked this discount down to point and shoot digital cameras only.

Shame.

But it does seem to work for the d3100 as he said which is good. Means you get a nice case included. And also means you don't end up giving your money to those tight arsed Dixons lot!

Hold off on a d90 - great camera but overpriced now that it is several years (4-5?) old. The d7000 is legendary but out of your price range however the d5100 is just around the corner - its largely expected to squash the d90 flat. Wait and see if i were you.

I think this is a pretty decent camera but this VIDEO review is not too great...and the lady really does know her stuff (I think!)

I don't think you can do quidco on Amazon, but this is a good price.
