I got this in December, it's a wicked piece of kit, but you'll want another lens for sure.
& extra batteries are a must have, because there's no battery pack option for this (well there is, but it's of limited use as it's unofficial)
    Voted hot!

I'm looking to buy my first DSLR. Is this a better buy than a Canon 450d?

Is this as good as the Nikon d5000, which jessops are doing a kit with 2 lenses for £499, + quidco ?

Good price, I paid £428 off amazon before cashback at the end of jan and that was the best deal i'd seen for it. heat added.

You can compare the specs here http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon_D3100-vs-Nikon_D5000

They recommend the D3100 over the D5000

You won't notice much difference in image quality between entry level DSLRs like the ones you have both mentioned. They will vary in features but overall your images will be roughly the same. The D3100 is slightly better than the D5000 but if you can get a good deal on it, go for it! I would recommend the D3100 over the 450D, mainly because i have the D3100 and i think it's fantastic. If you can find a shop that still has a 450D on display go and see how it feels in your hands. Like i mentioned above, most entry level cameras offer the same results, just get one that feels good in your hands. Feature wise I think D3100 > 450D.

Hmm not bad, this deal has my heat.

I am a bit unclear as to if this comes with the VR lens. It just says "NIKON D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm Zoom Lens"
No mention as to if it is a VR or not.

    Ah, answered that myself...
"The lens included in this Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera kit is the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S VR DX NIKKOR."

There is a FIND OUT MORE link with more info!

The kit lens on the Nikon is by general consensus a superior item to the Canon's slightly cheap and soft lens. That alone would sway it for me.

A good price, has been cheaper recently, but looks cheaper than anywhere else out there at the moment

Great find.....been waiting since the Nikon £40 cash back came back out for a good deal on a d3100. Does the CURRY5 code take 5% off the total order or is it only on selected items?

Ideal lens to go with this is the Nikon AF-S DX 35mm f1.8G looking at about £150 for the glass. Also remember it does not have a motor in the body so if you want auto focus look for the AF-S DX lens or something with the motor in the lens :]

Shows as £439 for me, maybe quoting the price after cashback
