I got this in December, it's a wicked piece of kit, but you'll want another lens for sure.
& extra batteries are a must have, because there's no battery pack option for this (well there is, but it's of limited use as it's unofficial)
Voted hot!

You can compare the specs here http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon_D3100-vs-Nikon_D5000

They recommend the D3100 over the D5000

You won't notice much difference in image quality between entry level DSLRs like the ones you have both mentioned. They will vary in features but overall your images will be roughly the same. The D3100 is slightly better than the D5000 but if you can get a good deal on it, go for it! I would recommend the D3100 over the 450D, mainly because i have the D3100 and i think it's fantastic. If you can find a shop that still has a 450D on display go and see how it feels in your hands. Like i mentioned above, most entry level cameras offer the same results, just get one that feels good in your hands. Feature wise I think D3100 > 450D.

Hmm not bad, this deal has my heat.

I am a bit unclear as to if this comes with the VR lens. It just says "NIKON D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm Zoom Lens"
No mention as to if it is a VR or not.

Ah, answered that myself...
"The lens included in this Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera kit is the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S VR DX NIKKOR."

There is a FIND OUT MORE link with more info!

The kit lens on the Nikon is by general consensus a superior item to the Canon's slightly cheap and soft lens. That alone would sway it for me.

A good price, has been cheaper recently, but looks cheaper than anywhere else out there at the moment

Great find.....been waiting since the Nikon £40 cash back came back out for a good deal on a d3100. Does the CURRY5 code take 5% off the total order or is it only on selected items?

Ideal lens to go with this is the Nikon AF-S DX 35mm f1.8G looking at about £150 for the glass. Also remember it does not have a motor in the body so if you want auto focus look for the AF-S DX lens or something with the motor in the lens :]
#20
Shows as £439 for me, maybe quoting the price after cashback
#21
Hi
Cheers OP for the deal - I too have been looking for a new DSLR for ages. I am a complete novice but would like to get into photography in a big way. Can anyone please explain which is the better all round camera - the D90 or the D3100? Also - I note that you can get the 18-105 lens with both - is it worth me getting this or should I just get the cheaper kit lens and upgrade afterwards?
Sorry to be so naive!
Thank you!

That's after the Nikon £40 cashback whereas this offer works out at £377.99 after Nikon cashback plus possible further 3% cashback from Quidco/Topcashback.
#23
Not a bad deal at all this one, I got my D3100 back in December and ended up paying £370 once cashback and Nikon cashback came through. This is the best deal I've seen since.

There are some really comprehensive reviews of the D3100 out on the www, I spent a good while reading them, the general view seemed to be the D3100 isn't that great for video due to a slow autofocus in this mode, but image quality in the picture modes is good (compariable with the 550D).

@angleseylad Suggest you read the Ken Rockwell reviews of the lenses in question.

There is a cheap Nikon lens on hduk at the moment, but I don't think it has auto focus motor in the lens

I don't think they will send Nikon UK stock so Nikon UK won't pay the £40 cashback.

Does seem a little dodgy after reading that post, better to buy from a reputable company which is guaranteed UK stock. Simply Electronics are advertising the Nikon cashback offer via Google AdWords adverts thought, so if it's not UK stock they're being rather naughty...
#33
That would be cheeky! It doesn't say anything on their site about cashback so i have emailed them to ask if they are Nikon UK supplied stock. Thanks for looking for a cheaper deal :)

Well done, yes that works....hmm...still not ordered as I have one big question that's bugging me, anyone know the potential price and release date of the D5100? I wonder if it's worth holding out?

This is the expected specifications of the Nikon D5100, but not confirmed.

..lots of rumors online.

I had a quick google and it seems likely that it's an upgraded version of D5000 with D3100 sensor. D3000, D3100, and D7000 have since been released after D5000. It's a rumor afterall and I wouldn't bet on it. I just purchased one D3100 myself and I'm well pleased with it (i'm new to dslr and I think most of the features of an entry level kit are pretty much the same - price was the deciding factor for me).

If you're like me, want to get into photography but don't want to splash so much cash so quickly, then I would recommend the D3100. After £40 cashback and 3% TCB (£10+), you can get this camera for as low as £368. I'm pretty sure D5100 would be at least £100 more expensive than D3100. Looking at the specs you've posted, I think I'd rather save that money and get another lens!

Good luck.
