How can a source in Hong Kong claim no import tax on electrical items?
    quezi
They don't claim that, they claim that any incurred is billed directly to them, which is exactly what happens.

They're a big company and totally legit.

They also do pretty much the best youtube photography channel.

I read somewhere that you lose the Nikon warranty on the camera and if there are any issues you have to send it back to HK?

I thought so too, but this appears to say otherwise: http://www.digitalrev.com/help/worldwide-local-warranty/NDMzNTc5MQ_A_A

Believe there's a D3200 either out now, or just on the horizon, which might explain why they're dropping in price.

Been an avid Olympus user for nearly 40 years, back to the days of the original OM-1, seriously miffed that all my original OM glassware is not compatible, wheras Nikon, Canon Sony (they bought up Minolta) still use a variant of their original mounts (obviously functionality is limited)

Whilst this is marketed as a 'beginners' SLR I'm sure it would do everything I need, and a lot more besides.

Given that nobody is going to create a 'digital back' for my old OM kit, and there's plenty of old 35mm leses (OEM and third party) I'd feel pretty comfortable switching to this camera.

Even if you have higher-end Nikon kit, at this price, it'd do fine as a 'spare' body.

Bought this camera around a year ago and it's brilliant. Does the same as all the top models do! If I was to pick faults it would be that the auto focus is within the lens therefore it's pretty noisy once auto focusing but you can use the manual ring instead of course. I paid about £100 more than this and if I could buy it again I definitely would. HOT

The D3200 is £200 more the RRP is £500 but I have seen it lately for about £450.

Yeah bit of an ambitious statement that one lol

No it's not full frame as it's an entry level DSLR however it's one of the best entry levels on the market. Have had this for a few months now (taken over 500 photos with 1 battery charge) and is great for those that want the image quality/control of a DSLR but never used one before. I'd highly recommend the Nikon 35mm 1.8 lens to go with it.

Had the D3100 since its release in the UK. It's a fab camera for someone wanting to move up to a DSLR from a compact or bridge as I did. For this price, it's a steal! Heat from me.

The in-built JPEG processing of these budget Nikons is really good. i.e. great for people who just want to take a photo and not mess around in lightroom/photoshop/aperture/etc.
As mentioned, the only downside is that you only get manual focus on older lenses, as the focus is all done in the lens. Not too much of a problem if you're going to stick to common kit lenses though.

An extra £75 eliminates this problem I think (best check) with the next model up:

A competitor to compare with this (and also available at bargain prices) would be the Canon 550D.

Edit: I voted hot, because at this end of the market and at this price, some of the downsides of grey importing can be overlooked.

You failed to notice lynchnigel was being sarcastic.

I heard this model is exactly the same as a Hasselblad and does the same thing.

If you're buying a point and shoot then don't spend over £40 ... because if your going to spend hundreds, your better of buying a entry level DSLR.

D5100 body only for £300.00 and Nikon D5100 with 18-55mm VR Lens kit at £377.00 might be a better buy for some.

Worth the extra would you say?

Despite posting this I haven't taken the plunge yet, and not even sure I can justify the expense at the moment, but so tempted X)

Guys, bear in mind, this camera DOES NOT have an auto focus motor.

That means it will only autofocus with lenses that comes with motor, which are much more expensive, a basic 50mm 1.8 prime lens with motor is £150, oposed to around £85 for the ordinary lens.

I bought one, the camera is great, image quality is really good and the build quality is top notch, but after a few days I exchanged for a Canon 1100d because of that, I would spend a lot more on lenses with motor includd.

The D5100's flip out (higher resolution) screen, higher resolution images, higher ISO/low light abilities, HDR, better battery life, external mic input and faster shooting speed are all worth the extra coins and they're mostly things you'll crave after getting used to the D3100 and moreso if you use HD video.

The D3100 is comparable to my old 1100D which wasn't quite the same spec as this (which only did 720p - the 3100 actually does 1080p24) but can be bought for around £260.

If this is your first DSLR i'd consider trying both Nikon and Canon's offerings out and see which you find more comfortable then decide which fits your budget best. If you're pinching the pennies though this is a pretty safe bet for the two mainstream offerings (I can't recommend any I haven't tried really, so bear that in mind!)

    ~£250 - 1100D
    ~£300 - D3100
    ~£360 - D5100

One last thing to think about - Canon have a wider range of lenses available, this increases both the quantity of second hand stock but also your chances of getting more unusual, older lenses which can be a bargain.

Some of Nikon's - an array of 50mm 1.8 prime lenses from the 70s, 80s are incredible and particularly cheap. Bear in mind that the D5100 and D3100 won't power the autofocus on the cheaper of these, but focussing manual isn't much of a burden when you can buy a stunning pin-sharp lens for ~£50!
