250 at asda direct - comes with lens which I think would be the standard 55 mm one. Free to collect at a selected stores only or 4.95 delivery.

To those who missed the amazon (dropped to 250 just for one day) and argos (no stock left) price drops.

I still haven't made a decision whether to get this camera or not but seem to keep finding it at 250.....!

Got mine in Feb for about £329 with a 300mm additional lens and memory card from Jessops. I think the D40 is quite hard to find now as it is quite an old model. I love mine though!

I had the same situation and plumped for the A200 - best decision I ever made :) takes amazing photos and battery lasted for ages. Took over 900 shots at Le Mans - still had 48% battery left.

There's no stock as specified in the post - there hasn't been for weeks.... I have checked plenty of stores as I've had my eye out on getting this for a while...

I got one from Amazon for £225 just after Xmas. I think the prices on cameras went up a little after that due to exchange rates with Japan.

This is an older model now, but it is a brilliant bit of kit, and well worth the price being asked here. Get it while you can.

thinking about buying a new camera

the D40 only has 6.1m pixels and a 3 x optical zoom so this doesn't seem that great on paper so why are people saying this is such a good camera?

forgive my ignorance here ...just asking a genuine question here :)

6 megapixels is enough to print upto A3 size in excellent quality, so unless you need more than that it is not an issue. Size is not everything when it comes to mp!!

It's not a 3 x optical zoom, because it is a DSLR, which means you can fit different sized lenses. The one with it is about equivalent of 3 x, and is very good in that range.

The quality of photo with a DSLR will generally be better than other digital cameras, especially indoors, and in lower light. This camera has auto settings, for easy use, but also full manual settings if you want to take things further. For the money, it is a brilliant camera, and an excellent chance to try a DSLR.
