Seems like quite a few places are dropping the price to £279. Nice find...
I make that £256.68 with Quidco... :)

I've just taken the plunge and bought one. I like the idea that you can get it delivered free and if I change my mind before opening it or find it cheaper elsewhere I can take it back to a Currys store for a full refund.

I can't wait to start taking snaps now :)

Is this worse than the D40X or are they the same? I've been looking at some photos taken with a D40X at work, and they look fantastic.

Basically the same. Except that the D40x is 10mp instead of 6mp. But unless you blow them up to A2 or above you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Plus they use the same ccd sensor so because the D40x is trying to fit in more mp's it will create more noise. So in that respect the D40 is better. I'd get this to be honest. Although the D40x is a bit smaller but that's more personal preference.
#5
It has a smaller sensor than the D40X, its lowest ISO setting is 200 compared to the D40X's 100 and it can do 2.5 shots/sec compared to 3 in the D40X.
#6
Go for the D40. I did and no regrets. As stated do not be fooled into joining the megapixel race. The D40 6.1 MP is fine for most people. Read this:http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm
#7
I looked into the D40X for a long while but the cheapest I could find was at Pixmania. You do get £40 cash back from Nikon with this model but it still works out at about £80 more expensive than this current deal. The only advantage of having the D40X, for me personally, would be the faster continuous shooting mode but even then with a fast SD card the Nikon D40 can take 2.9fps.

I came to the decision that this is my first DSLR and £266 was a cracking deal for a critically acclaimed piece of kit perfect for beginners. And in my opinion £80 in the pocket can go on a second lens further down the line when I get the hang of things :D
#8
D40X is the newer version, but as others have said, the D40 is a good camera and great value for money.
#9
The D40x will be harder to get hold of as the D60 appears in a few weeks, because it's being discontinued.

Does this come with a case? According to the Technical spec on the Curry's website: -

Battery Supplied NO
Wrist Strap Supplied NO
Case Supplied NO
Software Supplied NO

I don't believe that you don't get any of that stuff bundled in...is this just Curry's being daft?

I think you could be right. I'm sure it comes with a shoulder strap, and battery. I doubt it has the other bits though. At least I don't think it includes any software for editing or a case - it may have a CD with a driver on for the USB connection? Maybe someone who has bought one can confirm?

Hi guys,

My box was from Dixons. It came with the camera body and 18-55mm lens, battery and neck strap. I'm sure there were some disks in the box as well but its in the loft so can't check! However, XP picks up the camera as soon as you plug the cable in anyway.

Thanks for the reply, that's kind of what I expected to have included..for Curry's to state that there is no battery is just plain daft!

What have you done regarding a case for your D40? Any recommendations?
#14
Can the OP think about perhaps changing their original description, as this DOES come with the 18-55mm KIT lens.

Great deal, but I'm gonna wait on the Canon 400D to come down in the next couple of months.
#16
Been after one of these for a while and finally took the plunge, thanks!
#17
Can confirm that the Kit comes with the following:

Battery

Battery Charger

Neck Strap

Software CD

User Book

Quick Start Guide
Does not come with a CarryCase (go for a LowePro @ around £20 - £30)

We had a Faulty D40 (Flash stopped working) which John Lewis accidentaly exchanged for a D40x :whistling:

The D40x is pretty much the same but with more Pixels if you need them!

Thanks moob for pointing out that the post title does not make reference to the lens being included. I have edited the post title. :-D

Dont expect mega deals on the 400d when the 450d is commonly available. The 350d is still available in smaller quantities (from quite a few places too) and the price for that seems to sit around the £320-350 mark, which is odd as when the 400d had the cashback on it, it was coming in around £400.

I'm banking on it, but as you say, it may not fall that much in price...here's hoping!

I've regularly seen the 350D with 18-55 go for around £200 and the 400D go for around £285 on ebay, this is through Canon Outlet, expect the prices to drop even further with the 450D coming out soon

Although, the Canon Outet is just that - it sells refurbished goods (even though they come from Canon directly). It is not the same as brand new, never been used, cameras.

Have you used this site before?

I've been looking at this lens for a while but believe they may be gray imports on this site ?

You still get a year's warranty and like you said it's straight from Canon :)

I think for lenses you are covered by an international warranty unlike the camera bodies. Having said that I wouldn't buy anything from this company. I know people on Hotukdeals have had problems with them before. ;-) It is cheap though...

I've seen pictures from a 400D, they were nowhere near the quality of the Nikon we were using. I don't rate Canon at all.
#30
They are both good camera's and can take great photos, but the Canon's are way more money than this Nikon. For anyone that has been thinking of getting a DSLR, this should tip them over the edge!

D40 and D40x are identical in size as it is the same chasis. The difference is in the CCD and number of megapixels.

I bought a D40 over a year ago and its fantastic, only restriction is that it requires a lens that has the focus motor within the lens body, the camera is smaller than your average DSLR and it will not fit in there. Nikon and increasingly other manufacturers are making comaptible lenses but they are not as common and also more expensive as a result.

Bags, go for the lowepro slingshot to carry all your stuff and then they do a small case for DSLR's just to fit cvamera and cards which is fantastic at preventing damage.

D40X has a slightly higher continuous shoot rate but both can maintain this rate with a fast card for over 20+ shots, other manufacturers such as canon have to write to card way before this.

A disadvantage it that you cannot shoot in RAW at the same time as jpeg, thers such as canon can. But we must remember this is a beginers SLR and that feature is probably for more experienced users who want to edit.

You may have seen some pictures from a Nikon that where better than a canon, but I guess they were not side by side like for like comparisons, its well known the the Nikon kit lens is superior to the canon but the differences are subtle.
I bought a 400D last April and did a few test shots comparing the Kit lens with the highly rated USM EF 28-105 and my Kit lens seemed superior maybe I was lucky and got a good one, Note, after that I put it in the box and never used it again, I have a Fuji F30 and a Canon Ixus 950 (hot deal Amazon deal) The Fuji takes such great pics I don't use anything else at the moment, though you have to change a couple of settings or the Pics can be disappointing, but that's a for another thread, Epilogue I have put the 400D on Fleabay item 200200750806 if it doesnt sell I'll give it a go on here.

You can shoot in both RAW and jpeg.

Two images are recorded: one NEF (RAW) image and one in basic quality jpeg image.

Comparing the Fuji F30 to a DSLR? That's just bizarre - I bought the F31 in the hope that I could have a decent camera to carry around with me. The results were very disappointing. Likely to pick up one of these to compliment my old Canon Pro1 bridge-type camera.

I was not directly comparing the F30 to a DSLR and realise the superior qualities and flexibility of a SLR , Its just for my personal purposes the picture quality is high enough not to use the 400D, but as you brought up the comparison issue up here is a comparison shot between the
F30 and a Nikon DSLR fitted with a prime lens.
admittadly I too was initially disappointed with the results, the trouble is the F30 likes to set as high a ISO as it possibly can in every situation, this causes loss of picture quality, so I use the up to 400 ISO setting from the menu for daylight shots and and now I am V pleased with the PQ

To be honest I think you will be lucky to get that much when it's not that much more for a new one, and with the 450D coming out soon...

does anyone know which courier Currys use?

my local HDNL (which amazon and John Lewis seem to be using) guys are semi-cretinous gorillas who seem to take pride in how many corners they can indent on each box they kick around... I mean, deliver... so, I'm having to favour companies who use Parcelforce, UPS, DHL etc. for a while...
