When you decide for a DSLR, you are buying into a complete system and not just one camera. You need to look at the whole system of the maker and if they provide what you want. For example, Nikon and Canon have their IS not built into their cameras. That means you need to buy more expensive lenses witha built in IS later (Pentax, Sony and Olympus have their IS built into their camera bodies and all lenses you use have automatically IS).

This is only one point, there are other's to consider such as lens compatibility, etc. Nikon S5000 for instance cannot use all of the Nikon range lenses with automatic focus function..

The other thing to think about is popularity. Nikon & Canon sell more cameras than Pentax & Sony. This equates to more stockist of the former so more competition, so hopefully you will get better discounts on there equipment.
