awesome camera for beginner, but would suggest you to go for d90 if you can stretch abit more on budget

Surely better to buy new and get the 2yr nikon warranty....D3100 supercedes this model and so the price will have to come down in any case.... just leave it a bit I think......

Not worth losing 1.5 years of warranty (and with Nikon at that) for the sake of £40 IMHO.

The D3100 supersedes the D3000 by adding better video functionality. The D5000 is probably still the better still camera out of the D3000, D3100 and D5000. The D90 is supposedly imminently to be replaced with the D7000 according to http://nikonrumors.com/2010/09/06/recap-3.aspx, so expect some keenly-priced D90 and D3000 bundles as they clear inventory.

Why do you think the D5000 is better ? the only advanatage I could find is that it has a higher fps value ; other than that the D3100 appears to be better.....

Over the D3100, the D5000 has a vari-angle tilt-and-swivel display, which can help getting shots from unusual perspectives (high or low), and protect the display when not in use.

Furthermore, I'd expect the D5000's sensor to be less noisy than the D3100's, because the pixel sites are larger/spaced further apart (though the higher resolution of the D3100's sensor might compensate, if you scale its images down to the D5000's 12MP).

Oh, and with the 18-55 VR kit lens, the D5000 is cheaper than the D3100 (this situation is reversed if you buy the body only).

Not sure I agree with your points ; I have the D5000 and I very rarely use the lcd screen away from the body.

Better processing/noise reduction routines will most likely mean the noise on the d3100 being the same as on the D5000 (subject to what the reviews say).

The D3100 has much better live view (now I do use this far more than the vari-angle lcd screen) I believe as well as a better video capability. In short if I was buying now it would be D3100 over the D5000.........

I've got a D5000 and I use the LCD flipped out and down a lot of the time - it gets it away from your face when you're using the veiwfinder and so keeps it clean. However, if the live view is better on the D3100 that's a strong point in its favour.
