This Nikon model has very good reviews, so I went out to have a look at it in my local shop. The viewfinder is very, very dark compared to other SLRs such as Sony, Olympus, Canon, Pentax.

May advice is, make sure this is the camera you want. The only way to find out is go to a shop and take it in your hand before you buy from mail order. If you can live with this dark viewfinder (which makes manual focus almost impossible), and use mainly auto mode, this will be a fine camera.

I have the D3000 and the viewfinder is nice and bright
The D5000 has a live view screen also don't forget

Thanks for the heads up newKlear, I've been waiting to get this camera for a few weeks. Had been hoping it would dip under the £500 mark, so this is perfect - just placed my order.

£425 following Nikon cashback is great - not much more expensive than the D3000.

Thanks again.

Great camera. Just been trying this weekend in Geneva. Nice pics, even the video is good.
Regarding the viewfinder, is not the same quality as the Canon 500d but remember that you change positions, IMO very useful

Just ordered one! Was kicking myself when I missed the £469 price last time. Have been watching the price daily since, and it finally dropped below £500 again. A bit hesitated which one to choose between this and the Canon 500D which is £583 at the moment without cash back. The difference between these two is not worth £100 in my opinion.

Anybody know in case amazon drops the price further, would I be able to claim the difference (within 28 days or something)? Thanks.

The price on Amazon is £516.92. With cashback this works out to 516.92 - 50 = £465.92.

I am not where people are getting 455 & 425 from!

£455 was the marketplace price earlier (expired), £425 was amazon price £475 (which is back to 516, so expired now) minus £50 cash back.

Amazon does this dynamic price I think, with more people buying/viewing, they increase the price very quickly :? hate them doing this every time

Anyway glad I grabbed one before it expired  otherwise would be kicking myself again now :-D
