I don't know why people say the D40 is better (maybe for low light?), but the D60 also suffers the restriction of lenses you can use as the D40 did. It's a good price though.

That's the non-VR version. ;-)

Why do people say that the D40 is better. Given the price they might say it's not necessarily worth the extra but the price isn't that much different anymore. I would go for the D60 if you can afford it because it does offer extra specs that do produce better quality pictures.

Plus the VR lens is much better than the stock D40 lens.

In what way is the VR lens much better than the stock D40 lens.
Genuine and (for once) un-sarcastic comment.

I think the gist of the argument in favour of the D40 is that they both use the same size sensor but the D40 is "only" 6 megapixels and that makes it better in low light conditions...

In what way? I doubt anyone could tell the difference between the end results of either. The only thing that would persuade me to get a D60 instead of a D40, is the VR kit lens, not the body.

@dvdvicar VR is optical stabilisation built into the lens, and allows you to hand hold shots that you wouldn't be able to take hand held otherwise. In other words it stops camera shake and therefore blurry photos. All optical stabilisation systems do have their limits though.

Willoughbys were doing the D60+VR kit for £262 but are out of stock, Calumet do the kit for £279.

WarehouseExpress are usually quite keen and competitive on prices but rarely the cheapest as their sales seem to rely on easy credit deals. Really great company thought, excellent service I've had from them over the years.

|I think this counts as a hot.

edit: Yes, Amazon are slightly more ate £323

I agree with Ken Rockwell - the D60 is a suckers camera -D40 takes far better quality shots( better ISO range for one thing) but each to his own.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d60.htm

`The D60 is less sensitive to light then the D40 (its default ISO is only ISO 100 compared to the D40's default ISO of 200). Its less sensitive to light because the pixels have to be made smaller to cram more of them into the same-sized sensor. Smaller pixels collect fewer photons than larger pixels. Since the D60 is half as light sensitive, the D60 has to use twice as long a shutter speed or a larger aperture, which makes it more likely to make a blurry picture than the D40. OOPS!

Save your money and get the D40 instead. The D40's faster sync speed is invaluable for use with flash outdoors, and the extra light sensitivity in normal use will help make sharper pictures`

The smaller the iso the better image quality.

The D40 is a better camera and only costs £225 (+a good 8gb USB stick & quidco) from Jessops. Sorry voted cold :/

Are you meant to vote because it's the 'cheapest' price for the product?
#21
Interesting question. I vote based on price and opinion of quality of the item. If a better product is available at a lower price it makes sense to vote cold even if it's the best price for that product (and explain why of coarse). That way the hottest deals should be the best value deals, not just the deals with low prices regardless of item quality.

I prefaced the description with "if you REALLY want a D60" in the hope that it wouldn't turn into yet another D60 v D40 contest. The bottom line is, if you want a D60, this is/was the best deal.
