Personally If you are an amateur I would suggest a D40x as I have one along with a D3, D2H, D200, D1 and it produces excellent pics - Hence the cold vote

If you do buy a Nikon , don't forget to regiester it for the FREE 2 year Guarantee

Ironically this was found whilst looking for someone that wants to upgrade from the D40x :)

Good tip though, there are some bargain startup DSLR kits out there for under 200.

Just for anyone on the fence about his camera.

I bought one and it's BRILLIANT!! Truly a great camera. It's well worth paying that bit extra for. :)
