It works good but you need to go through the process 3-4 times to get the waterproofing up to how a garment should be from new, assuming it hasn't been done for ages.

I did follow the instructions carefully but didn't think i had to repeat it that number of times.

Would the water soak process before detergent mixing in the washing machine not just wash the product out anyway?

It's not a binary thing to be honest.
I was really disappointed at first, after a big load of rain, was clammy right through a paramo aspira jacket.
After it dried out could see that the waterproofing was patchy, after I put it through again it improved and a third time made it perfect but put it through once more.
The waterproofing mostly stays in the item from my understanding and from trying it out.

It's definitely a bit of BS going on though in terms of the marketing from my limited use at least.
