For four decades, Nina Simone has bewitched listeners with her uncategorizable blend of music. Unwilling to compromise to popular standards, hers has been a lonely course which led her away from the United States. Nina Simone adds to her recording legacy with this fine 1993 collection of contemplative tracks (which was her first release in more than five years).
A SINGLE WOMAN is an appropriately titled, almost autobiographical testament to her life, a meditation on the joys and pains of a woman alone. Her rich, deep voice soars dramatically over lush orchestral arrangements. The album's high point is a superb reprise of her haunting tango arrangement of "Just Say I Love Him" with guitarist Al Shackman (whom she worked with during her early years) making a guest appearance. Also included are three Rod McKuen songs and a moving version of the standard "The Folks Who Live on the Hill" that is dedicated to the late Prime Minister of Barbados.

That's right! It's the song called Ain't Got No... I Got Life, here in live format (IMHO better than the studio version heard in the Muller ad). Plenty of other great songs and covers, some you must already know like My Baby Just Cares For Me, The House of the Rising Sun (she sung it first), or I Put A Spell On You.

For a "best of" album though, I find there are a few shortcomings. Two of her best and most famous songs are definitely missing, Sinnerman (Felix Da Housecat had a hit with a remix of it a few years ago) and my all-time favourite I'm Feeling Good (brilliantly covered by Muse).

At £2.99 that would still be a great introduction to one of the most influencial artists of last century's second half. But right now it shows at £4.99 here too.
Note that you can listen to it for free on Spotify, especially if you want to try before you buy, or if Spotify has replaced your CD & MP3 collection (like for me):

Good find nonetheless, Nina Simone is one of these artists that everyone should know.
