Nintendo DS Original (Phat) Pre-owned £29.98 INSTORE @ HMV

Used original DS for £29.98 - GAME sell exact same item used for £49.99, so a £20 saving.
I would assume they are covered by a 12 month warranty, but cannot say for sure.

Gr8, if that warranty check out

HOT! Wouldn't expect there to be a full 12 month warranty, but very cheap, even so.

Is there a big difference between this and the newer versions?

not really........ just bigger like all other consoles...... as they update........they get slimmer n lighter.... i.e. this is slightly bigger/heavier than the ds lite hth:thumbsup:

VERY COLD

absolutely no point in getting a PHAt at this stage imo

These also have a noticably dimmer backlight than the DS Lite. This price is a real bargain but I personally would pay the extra for the DS Lite.

The DS lite and DSi have better quality LCD. The case size of the DS lite and DSi are slimmer.. the DS phat is called phat for a reason ;-)

Still good price if you can pick up one that hasn't been too badly abused. Last year when I was looking to buy a DS my local Game were selling preowned DS Lites and everyone he got out the box looked like a dog had chewed it and the owner had mistaken the screen for a scratch card.

I disagree. My 4 year old daughter borrows my wife's DS Lite from time to time. At £30 and a bigger design I'd say this would suit her perfectly.

Im not suprised at this price; I paid not 59 pounds for a DS lite; all be it preowned (but I picked a high quality one) with a 1 year warrenty so im not suprised.

Anyway voted hot; just make sure you ask to see all preowned ones avaliable; because usually they just bring you one from the back, usually one in rubbish condition

Well, since it's half the price of a pre-owned lite, I'd disagree entirely.

I find the phat DS much better for my big clumsy man-hands, anyway :-D

I see no point in bringing out a new version of the same console every 6 months or so, but each to their own :)

Thanks for the info everyone - rep left. Will probably hold off buying after the comments about the condition of refurbished stock.
#13
nice deal
#14
Good price...don't be put off by the usual exaggerrated BS internet comments of how the screen on the original DS is so bad that you will struggle to see the games you are playing on it ;-)

well, you can always go in and ask to have a look at what they have of course.

the screen on this is not as good as a lite, it is noticeably dimmer by quite a bit and by looking on ebay i can just see loads going for £35 including postage. but for one with a years warranty it is quite a bargain, £30 is nothing really.
#17
Seems like a cracking deal, I still have my original DS (with R4 card obviously), still works great, who needs a camera and a missing GBA slot?

They are a lot bigger, here are comparison pics........

As people have said the screens are a lot dimmer and also the stylus is smaller. The GBA slot does not have a cover so if you dont have a game in they can get dust etc in them, personally I quite like the retro look of them but have to say I much prefer using the ds lite:thumbsup:

At £30 though its a bargain!
#19
I cannot see the point even at that price!

I won't vote it cold as everyone to their own but I always found it to be clunky and horrid. DSi is the best buy (even at alot dearer) as they connect to normal set wireless connections etc.

The 3DS is out in October too, syaing that if you are thinking of the 3DS then this for a few months would do!

Yep I still use my DS from launch. Not a scratch on it and still works fine.

Roasting hot!

For all those who have the 'phat' relative to 'lite'. The Phat is much easier on the hands for long gaming sessions :P

Also I'm still on my original battery! 100's of charges later

not great for the price

its a no from me

The original has a very dim screen unless you are on the tightest of budget forget it.

I don't see how this is not hot, original DS for £30, are you having a giraffe!

It's not like they've added lots of useful features in the later versions

I'll be checking out HMV for these, watch out nieces and nephews, guess what you're getting for xmas!

Hmm. Well, to be fair, if you're in any kind of sunlight then it is very hard to see the screen on the original DS. I've owned one for many years, and have found myself struggling to play in the car etc. No problems inside, of course, and for this price I'd be tempted to pick one up if it's in better condition than mine!

Yep , it's not *that* bad , though if you see it side by side with a DSL there is a large difference.

Still , at £30 compared to £60 for a DSL or £100 for DSi , this would make a very good buy for younger children - you wouldn't be quite as worried if it gets damaged.

bitter disappointment? ;)
#28
Voted hot as its a good deal if the console is still in ok condition, but personally id pay extra for a Ds lite with its brighter screen, nicer look and being more portable due to its size... imo ;-)
#29
It's a good deal but I wouldn't recommend it personally. I've owned both an original and a DS Lite which I currently have. You'll only be paying a little more for a Lite second hand if you can find a good deal, and trust me, it's the right decision. The screen clarity on a DS Lite is much greater and it is so much more comfortable to hold. I have heard there were more original DS units with dead pixels than DS Lites too. You should bear these points in mind.

A second hand ds original :? how generous of you :-D
seriously though these are perfect for younger children ,a lot more sturdier than the other versions

Its not a bad deal anyone who has not got a DS already clearly wont be playing it much so this is ideal given the price.

If however you do intend to use it well I would say get one of the newer ones, especially for stylus games, you will be holding this in one hand quite a lot and it can get tiresome holding this heavy beast for a long time. The lite is more light, with non stylus games this is better since the thing is bigger it hold in your hands better unless your a child in which case the lite etc are better.

The lite is more light

Duly noted.

got this, still use it. My daughter has the ds lite. So, yes, it's a little bit heavier, but you'd have to be really weak to notice the difference. The screen is dimmer and the pen is smaller. All in all I think 30 quid is still a bit too high for a preowned ds - I reckon it's price marker should be about £20.

Still, like I say, I still use my tatty old DS and love it - in a way worth it if you want something that you can chuck about a bit (I think it's a sturdier design).

See what I did there - sat on the fence big time. My op - good enough, but a wee bit on the pricey side.
#35
the original ds is awful, its big the screens are not bright and it just feels "old".

Not a bad price for the kids i suppose but tbh id rather save a few quid more and get a ds lite.

thats kinda my point, the ds phat screen will not last nearly as long as a lite screen.

i am a preofessional gamer and the ds phat screens are not usuable for any useful test.
#37
another note: If you buy one find out its not in the best condition and they don't have anyothers that are any better when you return they will only give you a gift card no refund!
#38
the hinge is a bit rubbish on this, if you can afford it get the newer versions, if not then get this
#39
You can't fault the price, so it is a bargain, but I hate the original DS. Still does the same thing, but the screen is nowhere near as bright or good to use.

D.
#40
good deal even if its used for travelling or a flight on holiday or something where theres a chance of it getting broke would rather take a £30 phat than my dsi will keep you entertained for hours!

it might be store specific unless its online aswell because it is that replay thing that hmv do but if you can pick one up not bad for the price
