Nintendo's First Cross-Buy title is Squids Odyssey - Free on the Wii U if you've purchased it on the 3DS (Note: Must be purchased on the 3DS first, not the Wii U as it's only 3DS -> WiiU for the moment) - HotUKDeals

Free download of Squids Odyssey on Wii U if you've downloaded Squids Odyssey on a Nintendo 3DS that is linked to the same Nintendo Network ID that you have registered on Wii U.

Quote from the developer:
How Nintendo of Europe approach them for this promotion
''Indeed this is something new for Nintendo, they call it conditional sales. They [NoE] asked us if we'd be interested in this kind of operation and we said yes. I believe Squids Odyssey is one of the first titles or the first title to support this. Unfortunately, it's only 3DS -> WiiU for the moment, even though I know they would like to see this work the other way round (and we'd like it too!).''

Edit: Tried it out today and it works seamlessly. Once you purchase the game on your linked 3DS, when you go to the Squids Odyssey page on the Wii U eShop, the price will be shown as Free and you have the option to download. It takes up around 450MB

Well this is going to be crap when they start doing loads of cross buy titles because my wii u and 3ds have different IDs.

You didn't link them during the promotion they had at the end of last year?

If its 3ds purchases you've made it's not so bad as you can just create an account on your wii u using the network ID you use on your 3ds. If it's the other way around its not so easy...

Just had a look at the trailer, reminds me a lot of the Sparkz levels from the third Spyro game just up to date and more adorable. Certainly gonna look it up more when I get home.

That's an idea actually since you can easily create another Wii U NNID (after being careful about the digital purchases under your various NNIDs) and link up. Maybe have a chat with Nintendo customer service?

How much is it to download? (Not near my Nintendo!)

I had my 3ds ID linked previously to a wii u that I sold and you can't link your ID to another system after that which is stupid.

Sounds like an oversight.

What if for some reason my WiiU breaks x x

Do we know yet know if this applies the other way round as the Wii U version is already out?

That is a shame. A support page did mention there would be a web based method to deauthorise systems in the future (no idea how long it will take to materialise).

I personally don't have an NNID on my 3DS because in order to redownload something, the eShop country you are in has to have had it available and no country covers my entire library (NNID locks you to one country). Kind of ironic that the account system makes my purchases less safe in this case.

First port of call is always Nintendo's customer support - it's likely you'll send your Wii U back for repairs or if you're buying a replacement then you'd need to send both to them. A hassle but they're working on a solution that's more customer friendly.

Unknown at this point. The other sites that reported on this also don't know for sure.

I posted it as a freebie since it only covered those who purchased the 3DS version. One of the mods must have changed it to a Deal.

Absolutely true. I didn't post it as a deal though. Originally posted it as a Freebie

That begs the question for why someone moved it to this section of the website when you'd originally posted it in the correct section.

not the other way around just yet, you can't buy on wii u and get the 3DS version for free.

Should it be in the deals section? Possibly not, but if it wasn't I wouldn't have seen it, so heat from me.

Developers have confirmed that it doesn't work the other way around - "Unfortunately, it's only 3DS -> WiiU for the moment, even though I know they would like to see this work the other way round (and we'd like it too!).''

Yup £9.99 it is! Has anyone played the game by any chance to give users feedback?

Is this the same game as "Squids" on the Apple app store that's priced at £1.49? If so, I'd say it's a tad overpriced. Think I'll wait for it to go on sale.

Enhanced version with no in-app purchases ;p And in 3d on the 3ds.

Well this is going to be crap when they start doing loads of cross buy titles because my wii u and 3ds have different IDs.

You can have multiple Nintendo Network IDs on the same Wii U console. You just need to have them on a seperate user login.

If one user has a game downloaded any other users with different Nintendo Network IDs can play the games on the same Wii U console because the games are linked to console and not ID.

So basically you can create a proxy user with your 3DS's account ID on your Wii U, and you'll be able to access the Wii U games on your actual Wii U user login.

Source: Me and my GF have different Nintendo Network IDs on our users for our Wii U console, this is actually needed for 2 player online play on Mario Kart 8 if you want to accumulate points and not just be a guest.
