NIV Deluxe Gift Bible (Bible Niv) [Hardcover] You Save: £9.00 (36%)

Product Description
A gorgeous hardback edition of the much loved NIV Bible. Boasting a specially commissioned jacket illustration with ribbon markers and endpapers, this is a truly beautiful gift.
The New International Version of the Bible (NIV) was commissioned by the International Bible Society (IBS). Its mission is to reach out to people around the world with a faithful translation of God's word. The NIV was created by the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT), which is an independent body made up of renowned biblical linguists and scholars.
This edition uses anglicised text, with British spelling, grammar and punctuation to allow the Bible to be read fluently and understood more easily.

About the Author
The translators of the New International Version of the Bible were chosen from a wide range of denominations and various countries to form the Committee on Bible Translation, a working group overseen by the International Bible Society.

For a moment I thought this was the Tony Blair publication !!

Have never understood the appeal of fantasy fiction. Fairies, monsters and gods are for children with vacant minds.

Most rational people tell their children the first two are mythical. If only they were intelligent enough to free them fom the most dangerous delusion of all....

If you do buy and read this, I recommend Richard Dawkins' excellent book The God Delusion (www.amazon.co.uk/God-Delusion-Richard-Dawkins/dp/055277331X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1284286064&sr=8-1) to follow. Read both sides and then make your own mind up.

Is it fireproof? :D

Good bit of fiction

As 'markbargain' said, please DO read 'The God Delusion' by Richard Dawkins if you're going to have this. You need to be able to make your mind up with information from both sides and not just wildly and blindly follow a constructed 'faith'.

Come on chaps, I thought the idea of this site was to judge if a product was a good deal compared to buying it elsewhere. I do not always agree with some of the stuff put on this site but the question is - is it the best current deal not do I like / agree with the product or not.

Context is everything. If cat poison was legal, I'd vote cold on the best-priced product because I'm against cruelty to animals.

I'm also against cruelty to humans, so will reserve the right to vote cold on items that seriously curtail intellectual development :|

The Bible is a truly awesome book and the NIV is a good translation of it. I know some of the translators and they are good, upright people who live what they translate. Open-minded people will read it. It provided the foundation for the moral code of the Western world and inspired the end of slavery. It has changed the lives of countless people for the better. I live my life by it. Many have died to give us the privilege of having it in our own language and we should be grateful for that. The Church's problems today come from people not reading it enough....

Great deal, ordered one myself.

The NIV version is much easier to read than the more traditional translations as it removes all the archaic English language (thee, thou, shalt, etc.) which make no sense to most 'normal' people and recreates the translation from the best available Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek original texts into contemporary English.

I am Christian and have no problems believing in God's written word. I consider myself educated and open to science and physics, being a Professional Mechanical Engineer (well, almost chartered status). I also have a friend working on the CERN project who is an Oxford graduate of Physics, a family friend who is Professor of Physics and Meteorology, and ex-colleague friend who has returned to Cambridge to study for a PhD in Electron Microscopy; they all share my belief, not based on scientific fact, but on faith. Please do not make out that this book limits scientific, creative or intelligent thinking. It should be the very book that an intelligent person should read and understand.

Also, I have seen first hand the wonderful and miraculous signs of God's work in people's lives from restoring broken marriages to healing a friend with cancer, who was expecting to be given a life expectancy in terms of single digit weeks and instead walks today with no signs of anything, her doctors are baffled!

If 2,000 years from now people worldwide are living their lives by the word of Mr Dawkins, and continue to believe despite persecution and risk of death, then perhaps we can compare the two...

Although I don't think Hot UK Deals is really the forum to be discussing or debating relgion, and I apologise for doing so, in response to the comments above, but there is good opportunity all across the UK to enter a church to discuss, debate and question what we believe, argue, or whatever. Alpha Course. Look it up. There's some great ones in London (eg. HTB), attended by all sorts of city professionals, doctors, lawyers, brokers, traders.

The doctors are baffled, eh?

You probably want to ask your local Jehovah's Witnesses Training Centre to update their syllabus. They've made you sound like a total loon. At the very least, apply for a refund on the fees.
