No Sunday joint this week? Large chickens just £1.50 each @ Sainsburys

90DC90DC

First off. I regularly purchase large chickens (Plucked of course) for Sunday from Sainsburys. Popped into my local store in Nottingham today and they had loads left priced at £1.50. Dated for early May, not reduced, yellow stickered etc. Just plain old chickens.

These will feed a family of 5 or 6,dependant upon how large your waistlines are, but you should all enjoy it, especially at the price.

I've always found Sainsburys chicken to be succulent and tender and cannot fault it myself.

Why not try stuffing the chicken with some sausagemeat and a lemon for added flavour?

Not checked whether it's online or not.

Please vote either way so I know whether it's a good deal or not. I'm looking forward to the "Why did the chicken cross the road?" jokes!

I've never seen one priced at close to £1.50 before either, but that's why I posted this deal. Worth a look to see if your local one has whole chickens (Minus heads) at this price. Buy 4 for £6, freeze them, eat within 6-8 weeks and you'll be laughing.

Love your cooking tips. Alteratively, stuff with 39 garlic cloves. Hot.

@backtothecaves, it's how I had it last week. Though I'd advise removing the lemon if you're going to save some of the chicken for later as it leaves a nasty (and I use that word on very few occasions) flavour. Almost rancid!

I just stuff chicken with anything and experiment, mini-Heston I am, will probably try lime, nutmeg and rosemary tomorrow. Bang it in the oven, do absolutely nothing to it and remove when the meat is cooked thoroughly. Thing with chicken is you must get it at the right temperature (Follow instructions on packet, I do, works a treat)

Thats very very cheap, Defra publish the UK Wholesale prices simply google, defra commodity prices. Well below the wholesale UK price. But who's knows there origin, plus supermarkets have their own buying/market prices.

A couple of my favourite ways to cook chicken. Spatchcock the chicken then cut into 2 halves, smother it with hot peri peri marinade and make sure you get it underneath the skin where the breast and legs are. Then slow cook for about 3-4 hours.

Also try beer can chicken. There should be some you tube vids on this but it's very simple and unusual as well as a great excuse for cracking open a few beers.

Never buy caged chickens again, seen the suffering they go through.

I will spend that little extra for free roaming, I know they dont go outside a lot, but thats their choice and not forced just so I can have chicken for 1.50 each.

1.50 a chicken, sainsburys should be ashamed.
