Hi all, I just took a trip to tesco and theyve opened up a new phone shop section at my local store so decided to have a browse.

They Had the Nokia 5230 on Tesco mobile for £79.98 which had a sign next to it with £20 free credit.

Thought this was a pretty good deal as this is £99.99 + you have to pay £10 for a topup at the carphone warehouse ( £109.99 with £10 less credit )

There were also a number of other phones with £20 free credit available.

Hope this helps someone out!

The android phone does look awesome, ive been looking at it myself, just thought it may be a good deal for those who like nokias or dont like the sanfrancisco etc, as to being unlocked, unlocking is very cheap, even if you paid £15 to unlock it which is very expensive you would still be saving £25 plus youd end up with £10 more credit.

I doubt Tesco PAYG phones are unlocked. However, almost all Carphone Warehouse phones are unlocked, it is rare to find locked phones at CPW. However, as someone said, unlocking isn't a big problem usually.

Note that members have been able to get it cheaper via various discounts but also cashback is an option via Quidco or TopCashBack - in addition to that people have been able to get it cheaper over the phone and instore as well (the multiple posts within the thread cover the gambit, plus the OP has updated the thread with further details).

Nokia do have the best free Sat Nav in Ovi Maps. I have a 5230 and I regularly punch it as the Symbian OS really annoys me. A very slow laggy phone and Nokia don't know how to write a decent app that works, ovi suite is often buggy. Things just don't work smoothly on Symbian. I'd change phone but I use the Ovi Maps quite a bit, that's the only thing keeping me using the phone. Sometimes I can't even answer a call with it, as the touchscreen and physical buttons for answering calls simply don't work. As a phone it's a load of rubbish. I would have Android over Symbian any day of the week. Google Sat Nav isn't as good as Ovi Maps. I will probably get an Android based phone next and just keep the Nokia for Sat Nav only.

I would, but I've already got a 5230.

The reason for that is that there is no proper satnav software for Androids yet, Sygic and Copilot are close, but still get very mixed reviews for the route planning function. Ovi Maps are not ideal too, but at least it is free and covers all countries and has cameras too. Also SF is brick-sized which is an important factor for some people.

I got one of these months ago from Argos when they were £74 and then felt a bit gutted after they reduced them to about £69 about a week later. Oddly, it looks like they've put the price up quite a bit since then.

Yeah I got this at carphone warehouse and put my three mobile sim in there. Nice 640x360 (16:9) screen, great for watching videos.

I bought this phone when it first come out on Tesco for about the same (without the £20 credit). I was tempted by the built-in Ovi Maps software, needed a phone with GPS, and at the time (only a few months ago) nothing came close for the price.

I found out afterwards, though that the GPS chip in this phone is very, very weak. It would take at least 20 minutes outdoors with clear skys to get a satellite fix. I had turned the assisted part of the GPS (where it uses the cell towers to 'guess' your location) off because I didn't have data plan at the time. I had to resort to leaving the GPS running constantly so the signal woudn't drop, which maulled the battery life, and made the middleware slugish and unresponsive.

I did like Ovi Maps app when it was working though, easily comparable to TomTom, with the maps being more current, and who knows you may have better luck with the A-GPS function turned on.

If you are still considering getting one of these, please also bear in mind they are pricey to get unlocked. Non of the usual 'market stall' type unlocking shops could help (although this may have now changed) and the cheapest online unlockers wanted at least £20. So better to buy through one of CPW's outlets (who always supply unlocked handsets) if not using the Tesco network.

I've got the 5800 which is pretty similar and the sat nav is perfectly fine, although it does take a wee bit longer than a proper sat nav to get going and its a wee bit fiddly cos of the size.

Better deal on this phone at Tmobile - 99 inc one year unlimited music downloads from ovi store

Same for £63.98 http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/nokia-5230-63-98-delivered-argos-eb/787272

Dont buy this phone if you are planning to unlock it because it has got BB5-SL3 locking which costs around £20 to unlock and not available at most of the local mobile shops.

could be your handset only, I do not remember waiting more than 3 seconds to get a fix and I use it daily

the trick is to have a-gps enabled and configure it correctly in ovi maps

\good idea to put opera mini on this phone. It's one of the best browsers and is v fast, way better than th onboard one.
