Great little phone (& more!) with the only real drawback of very annoying alarms if you sync it in conjunction with Outlook and use it a a personal organiser!
Runs lots of Symbian applications, including OVI maps sat nav, not exactly TomTom, but it certainly works OK.

I got mine supplied unlocked, but this probably will be locked, and I think it is fairly expensive to get unlocked which is a bit of a bind if you want t use it on a cheap tariff like ASDA mobile. but great if you are using T mobile anyway.

Only thing that would put me off the immense number of negatives with the retailer! :-(

I would say ugly, heavy an dslow but it does work.

I got one that came with 'unlimited ovi music' but unfortunately this is locked to the handset and for me the battery life / sound quality do not make it a usable MP3 player replacement.

Can anyone suggest any 'fair use' 'software to get round this issue and play the music on my sony mp3 player instead?

Give us a faster, lighter, prettier phone for 50 quid though that has sat nav & the other features then as a good alternative.

I think your battery must be wrecked too, mine is fine for a week without Bluetooth switched on.

yep i have this on virgin and for a budget phone its great!

No wifi but the 3g is fast. just make sure you have a good usage allowance.

ovi maps are alright too and save you haveing to carry around a satnav unit.

I assume those are locked to t-mobile. Unlocking will cost £25-£30, add this to the price if you want to use another network sim.

turbo sims or the like are only a few £ from dealextreme and these phones can be debranded free.

I don't think so - the sim shims, do they work with more recent models? I was under the impression they didn't.

Unlocking was 25 quid when I last enquired, these are NOT supposed to be easily or freely unlocked, Unless of course you can provide us with details of where they can be unlocked free?

What do you recommend - this or the 5530? Apart from 3G/WiFi, what's the difference?

I have never looked at one, for a start it's 130 quid, not 50, so it's not in the same price bracket so I wouldn't try to directly compare it.

Here it's £44.99, but you have to buy £10 topup:

Probably the reason it's not in stock anywhere I looked!

I have had this phone for 4 months now and although it is not the fastest smartphone, for the price it is great, Has many applications, I prefer googlemaps on it, and you can get a free pdf reader too.
You won't get a smartphone even close to the price..

This must be the best phone £50 can buy.

This is a pathetic phone from a usability perspective. Avoid touching with a bargepole !
Unless you like getting RSI from touching the screen 4 times for selecting 1 option.

Make sure he has unlocked a T-mobile uk Nokia 5230 before, from his feedback.

I've had this 'phone for a few months and at £50 it's good value. Get a micro SD card, load ovi maps onto it and you have worldwide sat-nav for free - you can run the application in offline mode to save on data charges. You can also download Opera Mini which is a much faster web browser than the bundled one. Only downside is that I haven't yet found a Windows program that will reliably transcode video to a format that the phone will play (On Linux Transmageddon using the Nokia N800 profile works ok).
#21
Tmobile have the same phone for £80 including a years unlimited music download - thats unbeatable.

I have the 5800 and although a bit lightweight its a great phone for the money and sounds good - great battery life too.
#22
Great phone for the money. If you don't like the phone it's worth £50 for worldwide mapping if you're going to hire a car abroad! You'll need an in-car charger for GPS (I got a USB charger and a USB to Nokia CA-126 lead off ebay) 'cos it kills the battery - but I actually prefer it to my old Tom-Tom.

However if unlocking is expensive it might be better to wait for Carphone warehouse to do refurbs again as they're already unlocked.
#23
nokia is easy to unlock you don't need unlock codes
#24
Well I am mostly using a zte blade which was 70 quid and does tick those boxes. Battery on the Noka is OK unless you use the features - same as most phones bur it can't compete with a dedicated mp3 player. Also a plus for the nokia, it is fairly robust.

OK so show WHO is unlocking them, as this is exactly the opposite to my findings a few months back!

Hot! I had the Nokia 5530 - this is basically the same but with GPS and 3G instead of Wifi. Great piece of kit.

I tried to get this phone unlocked from T mobile the cost was £15.00. When they sent the code through it wouldnt work. I phoned T mobile back up to ask for a refund. They said they had another code that I could try. That didnt work either. Gor my refund but now Im stuck with T mobile when I had already brought the tesco £10 sim. Really disappointed.
