Do these cash back things honestly work? Im totally afraid of deals like this, i guess as an American such a deal is foreign to me.

The concept of actually paying a cash back is also foreign to half of the retailers! ;-)

Stick with the ones that are well rated and you'll be ok.

Cashback does work. The idea is that the retailer hopes that the customer will forget to claim or not be bothered to claim. Usually, if everyone who takes out the contract claims then they don't make any money. They rely on about a 50% takeup.

Personally I am a bit cautious and at the moment would go with CarPhoneWareHouse, E2Save and TheLink... but I haven't had the need to investigate any others recently. I know people have had problems with E2Save but I have to say that although I have had a couple of problems with them sending me cheques for the wrong amount they have always been sorted pleasantly and efficiently on the telephone. I would prefer to go with CPW if I could find a good deal with them when my next contract runs out. I have been doing cashback deals for 4 years now. Never had a problem. Just remember to follow the T&C's

Aren't mail-in rebates etc. very common in America? This is the same thing as a mail in rebate but it is for a mobile contract (as opposed to a product like a TV). So the good sides and headaches are about the same as they would be in the US if you were sending in a mail in rebate. i.e. some companies are fine and send it back no problem and others you might have to chase. The reasoning for them is the same though..they are relying on people forgetting to submit their claims and thus paying a lot more in the end. Although we're all pretty savvy here, a lot of people are not so on the ball ;)

A rough estimate is about 85% people dont claim it on time, hence lose the cachback. With CPW group, if you miss once, you can still claim the remaining instalments. But with MOST other sites, missing one claim will void ALL the remaining ones.

Yeah they are, but not on a contract like this. And honestly most people dont use or trust them. Thanks for the info though, ill try one as im good at setting reminders.

Sorry to sound thick but I’m new to these offers. How do you get the cashback? Do you need to run up a large bill to make the phone a bargain? Is the phone yours after the contract?
#12
You pay the rental upfront & then claim from the retailer at regular intervals (3 or 5). Pls refer to t&c's of the retailer. You can also read feedback on the retailer by following the link in the 1st comment.

BTW, welcome to HUKD dp124 :)

Thanks. In this case the line rental and phone are free?? Whats the catch??
#14
The catch is if you go over the free minutes or texts every month, you'll pay the standard rate for them. I think this is how these retailers make some of their money.

But this isn't a dodgy deal dp124 - loads of HUKD members are on contracts like this - including me. Read the terms and conditions carefully to satisfy yourself, if you want to, but this is a respected retailer and a good offer.
