Still decent enough specs for running WP8
Apparently getting the 8.1 update

Having recently converted to WP8 (via a Lumia 630) after years of Android, BlackBerry etc. I've been watching the better Pureview enabled devices like the Lumia 1020 for ages.... it's finally dropped to my biting point on Amazon...

not much more than the O2 refresh deals that came up, but sim free without the hassle of signing up and cancelling contracts and getting unlock codes etc... (even if that effort did bag you an exclusive 64GB version, I couldn't be hassled ;)

Hope this helps anyone else that's been eyeing this device...

ps. might be because it's recently had it's End Of Life date set (possibly 15th October)

Free Nokia camera grip worth about £40 if you buy before 3rd August:

http://www.hotukdeals.com/freebies/nokia-1020-camera-grip-1942708

Great camera, but I did miss the choice of apps on Android. Recently went back to using my Nexus 5 as my primary phone and the 1020 has been relegated to backup / digital-camera-with-phone-features

Good price for Amazon and if you want brand new, though there are loads of the 64GB ones appearing second hand now. Friend of mine picked one up for £155 only a couple of weeks ago. I sold my 64GB with the Grip for £240 about a month ago

sold 2 at 290/a piece.. we all have done the o2/deal here

Guessing that was a few months ago. You'd struggle to get anywhere near that now.

I have one of these as my backup phone. The camera is worth the price tbh. 8.1 is out shortly and I have the developers version which runs very smooth.

I'm really tempted to get one of these. What's the OS experience like compared to iOS7? I'm an apple man at heart but I'm bored of my 5S and fancy something different until the iphone 6 makes an appearance

Always been a Nokia fan myself (always excellent build quality), I think the update to Windows Phone 8.1 has now made it a much better competitor as when it was 7 and 8 it was missing too many key apps and basic functionality like a notification centre. Had mine since a couple of months after it was released, camera is incredible!

What do you feel like you are missing? A year ago it seemed like WP8 was way behind but I cant think of a top app that's now missing.

I love my 1020 the camera blows my mind.

Just like a couple of comments above, what apps are missing from it? I can't think of any as they have all been added over the course of the last year. Even Blackberry Messenger BBM was added a couple of days ago...

It's smooth, like iOS. The flatter design of iOS 7 is more similar to WP. Android L looks to be going the same way. It depends what you want apps wise, the newer 'fad' apps and some you may use might not be there. But on the whole I love the actual OS, and Nokia's hardware is top notch. If you have the cash and fancy a change I say give it a try. You can upgrade the OS to 8.1 Dev Preview with ease or wait and the official release will be along shortly. Cortana and all :) WP as an OS is a nice experience, smooth, nice animations and a uniform look with nice typography.

it's not the lack of apps, it's the quality of them. They aren't near the ios and android standard. I had this phone for about 2 months and sold recently. very good camera and build quality. using a galaxy s5 and much prefer it

Voted hot. If you want an amazing camera, this is the one for you. I don't know if I'd recommend buying one currently as for £350 you could have that awesome deal on the 930.

I think the standard apps you would expect to see on every OS has definitely caught up, games like the WatchDogs app I doubt have as you say, I don't download any on phones so you're probably right in that case :)

TBH it was mainly silly apps I used when out and about - shopitize and clicksnap etc. Media-wise Plex was great on the platform (possibly the best on any mobile platform; the interface was fantastic). I managed to find 3rd Party apps, often paid apps which I gave a shot thanks to the £20 Windows credit I received during a promo when I bought my phone (for example, CloudMuzik for Google Music and CloudSix for Dropbox), but overall I found trying to find an unofficial app for some popular apps on iOS or Android very hit and miss. For example, Dropbox does not have an official app on Windows Phone, and searching the store for Dropbox brings up many alternatives, but many are either useless or look risky.

I also found other apps were not as well supported on WP - Waze and GTA San Andreas were two examples. Waze felt like it was an old version and SA was nowhere near as good as the Android version on my Nexus 5

Don't get me wrong, it is my first Windows Phone and the OS was not as bad as what most people made it out to be, but I did miss the familiarity of Android

Agree with that, I think Microsoft really need to push companies to develop for the OS, they seemed to have a lazy approach to it, i.e Facebook Messenger app taking far too long to come out. I expect it will improve since moving to 8.1, but will always be a delay in apps for a while yet until they combine all the Windows OS (mobile, desktop, NT) to make it easier to port across so the apps have a larger user base, which they think Windows 9 'Threshold' may do.

Thanks

I tried WP as I really wanted to like it. the problem isn't so much the lack of appa, bit the quality when compared to their iOS/Android counterpart. Spotify is nowhere near as good as the Android version. and, unless its been updated since I tried it, the eBay app looks like it was created for a school project.

I don't know where you have heard that, but my phone running 8.1 dev preview and 8 before that (Samsung Ativ S) has stellar battery life - I use my phone loads and loads and it very easily lasts a full day - literally from 5.30am to 11pm - with gentler, moderate use I have extended this to beyond two full days. I do not switch anything off on my phone to achieve this, wifi is on constantly, as is full cellular data and location services, brightness full.

No official Tinder app, but Rudy Huhn (A very, very accomplished WP developer) has released 6tin which gets excellent reviews.

Now it's at the same price point as the Nexus 5 and LG G2. I'm not sure which one of the three to go for.

guys any one suffering from same problem - couple months back I went on a holiday and the camera stopped working. It was just black empty screen even the flash light would not work.

I thought ill come back and get it exchanged however on arrival it started working again. Then last weekend I went on a bike ride and the camera didn't work again however this meltdown lasted only a weekend. Any one else suffering from same problem?

Nexus 5 good all rounder, battery life not great with stock settings. Latest Android version including forthcoming Android L

LG G2 sort of a better Nexus 5 that sometimes isn't better.

Nokia Lumia 1020 not Android, really crap awful app store, the implementation not the amount of apps. Very decent slick operating system, I prefer it to the bland Apple IOS. Easily the best camera on a smartphone, recent gsmarena group test attested to this. I fancy getting one to mess with but I'm getting a DSLR soon, so can't justify it.

I know of a few people whose cameras have stopped working. I suspect it's the rather complicated components being constantly knocked around in the pocket. Phone does have a 2 year warranty though so best to send it to Nokia.

O2 Refresh is a better deal imo if you need a lot of memory, as you get 64gb. Although I agree it's a lot more hassle with the unlocking and cancelling contracts. If you only need 32gb though this is great. Voted hot.

I checked the O2 site recently btw...
The new lumia 1020's available appear to be only 32GB now and price up to £269.99 (plus 1 month of cheapest call package £13).
The refurbed ones they have listed seem to 64GB but are £360!?!? (plus £13 for a month).

Kinda wish I could've been bothered with the hassle when the 64GB was only £240 but hey ho.... was a scorching deal for those that got it :)

ps. my lumia 1020 should be arriving today.... can't wait to try it out :)
