Cheap, but its the lowest specced windows 7.8 phone available... It won't receive any updates, and app support is extremely limited.

Op: You can change the default search engine to google if you don't like bing.

Forgot to add that live tiles aren't actually 'live' on this phone. Only the built in system apps with live tiles will work, any third party apps will have static tiles. This is due to the extremely limiting 256MB.

£20 more gets you the 520 which is far better, runs most of the latest apps and will soon be getting the latest Windows Phone update. 510 is stuck on a version of WP that is effectively finished.

You are correct, sorry. I was remembering my old LG optimus 7 which allowed the change as it came with google by default, apparently this wasn't available for the older lumias. There is a dedicated google search app in the store though which could be pinned to the start screen.

Yep, official support for WP7.8 finishes in September 2014...

The 520 is a much better phone, and its unlocked from CPW.

As Prices for Windows Phones go .. I'd take Chancooluk's Advice & hook up the more Sophisticated Unlocked Version at CPW ..... :-)

you don't want to inflict bing on her, but willing to spend double and inflict android on low end hardware on her. must be love :-)

i'd second the advice above - split the difference and go for the 520.

Hey, an extra £2k will get you a better car than the one your looking at. Spend an extra £10k on a house and you'll get a better one, etc..

I have the moto g and am very happy with it and all the associated Google apps etc. the windows phone is unknown territory to us. I understand windows phones run well on weaker hardware. as long as she can access all the Google stuff still it might be OK. have to ponder over it.

Windows phone 7.8 loses support in September, so no new apps or anything. Not really an amazing deal when the 520 is only £59 in a lot of places now.

App support is improving but WP8 has a weak selection of apps.
That said, I have a 520 which I use for work and it has it's pluses:
Nokia MixRadio is really useful for discovering new music and it's offline caching is great for avoiding data charges.
Here Drive is nearly as good as Google Maps but it's offline so again, saving on data allowance.
Battery life seems to be brilliant for me (5 days between charges) but I don't use the phone much for anything other than the above and calls - if this were an Android phone, it'd be dead in a day without even turning the screen on!

I love my Nexus 5 but the 520 is an excellent phone for the money and many prefer the simple interface.

Edit: heated this deal as the 510 is a good phone for £40 if app support is not a major concern.

Yeah sure but we're talking about £20 here, not a few grand. If you want a smartphone for browsing the internet it makes sense to buy one that's still a current model. The 510 is a dead duck. Would you seriously pick this over something better for the cost of a few jars?
#18
Isn't the 520 from CPW £20 + £10 top so £30 more?
#19
It's only £10 more (£49.99) in CPW if you are upgrading a payg handset on any of the main networks.... And no top up required. Even if you don't have an eligible handset, its highly likely that you know someone who has.
