  Are these on Tesco mobile? If so, I understand that they're locked to Tesco and can't be used with 02 or giffgaff.

  Tesco use O2. As does GiffGaff
  But I believe Tesco CAN'T be used by either for some strange reason.

  Its a valid question and point to make. I was able to use a Tesco SIM in an O2 phone however when I purchased a Tesco Mobile phone I wasn't able to use the O2 SIM in it.

  I'm on Giffgaff. I know it runs on the o2 network. The point I made and the link you posted were both in a similar thread yesterday where this phone was on Tesco mobile.
