  I would be absolutly amazed if this came unlocked particularly due to the fact its on PAYG
  
  For Pay Monthly and Pay & Go customers
  
  If you're a Pay Monthly customer then you can request for your handset to be unlocked at any time, free of charge. This policy may vary according to the handset you have purchased.
  
  Don't forget that you'll still need to honour the remainder of the minimum term of your contract even if you place a non-O2 sim into your phone.
  
  If you're a Pay & Go customer, your O2 mobile can be unlocked 12 months after purchase for a one-off £15 fee which we'll deduct from your airtime balance. This policy may vary according to the handset you have purchased.

  O2 Payg mobiles are locked to O2 when bought direct. The contract phones usually are too. Unless buying from carphonewhorehouse when usually unlocked

  O2 pay as you go requires a 15 quid unlocking fee.

  If your on pay monthly it's free to get unlocked, £14.70 otherwise.
  
  So if you have a friend on O2 just ask them to do it for you.
  
  From what I recall, its one phone every 6 months free.
  
  I wonder if Carphone warehouse will price match.

  be wary, I've had mine 9 months and it has crashed on average once a month. it is now winging its way to Nokia as it can't be fixed at a local repair centre. from the people i have spoken to (nokia repair centre, and phone shop where i had to buy a nasty £20 phone to use whilst mine is being repaired), it has been happening a lot!
