This is the new Windows Phone 8 Nokia Lumia 820 just released from Carphone Warehouse with a deal that gives you the phone and a wireless charger worth £55 for FREE. To be clear: From what I'm hearing all Nokia 820 phones are going to comes with wireless charging shells but this is the only deal I can find where you get the wireless charging plate for free as well.

If you scroll down to the wireless charging section it says this:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wireless charging – charge up without plugging in.

You can power up your Lumia without cables or plugs. Simply lay your Lumia on a charging plate (wireless charging plate now available for FREE with your order) until you're ready to go. Put a plate in the kitchen, the office, the bedroom; the more plates you have, the more places you can easily charge.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
As far as I can tell the Nokia Lumia 820/920 wireless charging plate will retail for £54.99 inc. VAT ($88) when sold seperately, which makes this quite a good deal! Phone available in Black or White. Extra colour covers can be bought.

The phone specs can be found here: nokia.com/glo…ns/

EDIT: 2nd November 2012 - the deal is back up on the CPW website. Is there any way this can be unexpired?

Certainly a heck of lot better than the terrible ee contract deals and the free charger's a nice bonus, still more than happy with my bargain Lumia 800 at less than 40% of the price though!

Aside from wireless charging, I could almost get a SGS3 for this price … Aside from wireless charging, I could almost get a SGS3 for this price and it'll have far better specs. It is a dual core S4 which means it can match the Tegra3s etc but the GPU is quite old and the screen is positively last year... so who the heck in the right mind would pay more than 300 quid for this?

Anyone who wants the device. Not everyone is a spec junky. I don't use an S4, I use a phone. Its visual appeal, the OS, the Ecosystem. I'm not saying your value judgement is wrong, its yours, you're entitled to it. But many people will see a newer snazzier OS on nice hardware with great reliability, great build quality, Nokia specific apps and good support going forward.
Some people might just like the colour red. These things aren't a sum of their parts, otherwise none of us would pay the silly price we pay for these things - prolly cost about 100 dollars to build eh? Having said all that, for a few quid more you could get the HTC 8X which I would take over this.

I tried a nokia lumia 800 windows phone yesterday and they are fantastic so I should imagine this 820 should be the dogs, I think the windows phone could take the market away from Apple and Android, I own the iphone 5 and thought the iphone 5 was good but after trying Windows on the Nokia I am going to buy the top of the range Windows mobile with 4G and what not, bye bye iphone, I am going to shop around for a top of the range Windows mobile ........

Nokia ... you sure you want to price it like this?

It's currently at 490 degrees heat and rising... Yes, I think they know slightly more about what they are doing than a random consumer, completely uneducated in the economics behind the decision!

Doesn't mean they're right of course, we'll just have to wait and see.

Winner of dumbest comment of the week for the start of that. Nokia or htc might have made sense.

I got this on Friday from CPW in Selfridges... I must say I'm really impressed by the phone and it's build quality. Windows 8 is awesome and I'm glad to have switched from my Iphone 4.

yep the lumia 800 deals are an absolute mega bargain ... if i hadnt got a >1 year old optimus 7 i would get a lumia 800 in a heartbeat .. my father has one and the quality and screen are absolutely amazing (non replacable battery i dislike & camera is that same average effort as other similar android/winphone etc models - should be better for a nokia !) ... as i'm happy with my optimus 7 i'm waiting for another 6 months or so till there is hopefully a nokia win 8 with a barnstorming pureview camera in it - fingers x

Like others have said it does have wireless charging. LG are normally good with build quality. Only thing which normally lets them down is poor OS upgrades and bad OEM software.

And yes my second phone is a Lumia and the build quality is good.

£380 for a feature phone that will be less than £100 in a couple of months OR £239 for the best smart phone on the market? Difficult choice.

Well it's more featured than the 8S but I was expecting pricing to be within 20% of that rather than more than 70% more (if the sim free retailers/importers prices are right for the 8S). Wondering if HTC are thinking of upping theirs slightly.

At £55 a time oh yeah, people are going to be buying loads of them.... oO

totally agree. I like the 920 and wp8 looks fun but not tempted at those prices. will get the nexus 4 for a nice new phone to tide me over until 920 drops to sensible money then may give it a try then -if Nokia survive that long!

gonna wait till next year and see what the 920 pricing is like, contract up in june so hoping for a £20 a month plan

I got excited because I thought it was a 920. But 820 has the same Pixel density and screen size as my 15 month old galaxy s2. also has half the internal storage.
    Better camera though.
I'm assuming that processor on windows os can make it perform better.
hmmm will vote hot at £300

As much as I adore Windows Phone, I find it hard to disagree with this. The Nexus 4 is a beast with better specs in almost every way (bar things like expandable storage).

I would urge anyone to try Windows Phone though, it's a fantastic platform and by purchasing a Nokia WP8 you get access to a wealth of Nokia only apps such as Drive (with offline support). Better (imo) than Googles implementation of offline maps.

If anyone's not had a Windows phone before and Apps are important to you, I might recommend you look elsewhere as the Windows app store isn't great, and can be expensive compared to Google Play and the Apple App store. Personally I found myself going back to Android.

I have to say though, based on my experience with Windows 7.5 on a Lumia 710, the interface is a joy to use, and sounds liike Windows phone 8 is even better.

    Looks like an ace phone!

    Beautiful and specalicious.
  20. scrumpypaul's avatar
    Horses for courses.

If specs are your thing, look elsewhere towards the Android offerings, though obviously they have their share of bugs, plus Google is a bit too flippant with my information than I care for.

If you're an iSheep - then you shouldn't even be looking here.............move along, nothing to see.

It is true that Windows Phone has some limitations ***but*** you simply don't need a WP to be specced to the hilt as this OS is far less power/resource hungry than the likes of Android.

As for apps - yes, it doesn't have as full an array as either Apple or Android, but the marketplace is still growing - rapidly. Some apps may be a bit costlier, but in real terms I would suggest this isn't going to be that big a deal. If I look at the apps I have actually purchased - on either Android (for the couple of years I used it) or WP over the last 22 months or so - the grand total I have spent is around £20 - tops. Roughly £8 Android, £12 WP. And that's over around four years now, so it really isn't a big deal for me.

What is important for me is having a phone that is completely reliable, has a great signal, is an absolute joy to look at and use (still - even after almost two years as a WP convert) and is that little bit different. I literally shudder (okay, maybe not literally) when I look at the really old-fashioned interfaces of iOS and Android. They are so last year and very, very boring.

Some of my mates were die-hard Android or iOS users and came up with all the usual arguments against WP. One by one, I am managing to swing them towards WP. As a vehemently pro-Android mate said to me, maybe a month or two after he'd bought a Lumia 710, two things................

Firstly, the cost outright of buying and running the 710 as compared to his contracted Android handset would repay itself within about 4/5 months. He saw this period as a test to see whether he liked WP and if he didn't he wouldn't be particularly out of pocket.

Secondly, whilst he had some gripes and groans over the first few days, until he got to grips with the handset and what it could offer, he now loves WP. His outlook was that it isn't enough just to look at it or play with it for a few minutes, or a few hours, or even a few days. It's when you've been using it for a few weeks that you finally realise just what a leap ahead of the other OS's that WP is - so fluid, so bug-free, so different.

His next step is a Lumia 920.

The 820 requires a special back plate for wireless charging - doe sit mean you get the actual charger, or just the backplate?

Also, if wireless charging isn't your thing, the HTC 8X is on Clove for £399, and has a much higher res screen. I've personally gone for that, but if you want wireless charging and an sd slot at the expense of resolution this is a good buy.
  30. deleted628982's avatar
Charger is mentioned in Overview, in brackets.

BE AWARE! They may include the wireless charger, but the 820 requires a SPECIFIC back cover to be able to use it. Its the 920 that is able to wireless charge out of the box.

LG's build quality has always been good what let them down is their rubbish OEM software. As for wireless charging it does have that. Yes there is a lack of 4G but look at the priceplans for 4G in the UK. But the lack of sd expansion does let the phone down big time.

The phone is alright though expensive compared to nexus 4. Nexus 4 may not have 4G but it has HSPA+42 you can guess by the name its max speed though averages around 7mbps which I think is fast enough for most consumer.
