Update: Forgot to mention, they told me the phone was £380 (including £10 topup) but didn't have it in stock, so I'm on the waiting list and they get stock on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and they will only have it in black.

Thought it was worth me posting a comment on this thread as I've been following it from day 1.

I've been looking at the Lumia 920 pretty closely; even before it "officially" released. I couldn't justify spending £400+ on a phone when my current phone was still working fine for me; that coupled with the crazy EE prices was a real put off. Anyway, since then, I've had a whole load of issues with my phone and alas, trying to take out a micro sim holder, completely obliterated the sim connectors and transformed my phone into a 4" tablet.

As a Virgin mobile customer, I went into virtually every EE store in Nottingham and followed up on the advise of striker33 (that the 920 would work with Virgin sims). I'm the cautious sort and wanted to see if my Virgin sim worked too, you know how it is - there's nothing quite like seeing something work with your own eyes.

I popped into the Victoria Centre store first and asked whether they sold them on PAYG and if I would get the charging plate and headphones free, the good news was yes. I then mentioned that I'm a Vigin customer and whether it would be possible to try my sim out in a 920. The rep was helpful beyond belief and brought out a white "4G" version - in my head I was thinking "no chance, this isn't gonna work" guess what though - it did!!! It said no network for about 30 seconds but it eventually connected, we rang the '789' customer service number which connected with no issues, we then tried the sale reps phone - great news I thought, I'll take one....unfortunately they only had the black one in stock - which I don't really fancy.

Anyway, I decided to pop into the Clumber Street store and they only had the black one too which was a tad disappointing. whilst I was there though, I thought I'd ask the same question and see if my sim worked in this version too; you know how it is, the first time might have been a fluke (you can never be too cautious). Again, as Striker33 stated previously, it worked perfectly, tested it out with 2 numbers again and no issues.

I then popped into the other stores on Albert street, the first didn't sell it on PAYG and the other had absolutely nothing in stock.

Decided to pop into Phones4u on my way back to Victoria Centre and thought I would ask them the same question. The sales rep I was talking to was rudely interrupted by another rep saying "we don't sell them on PAYG and SIM free" and then "why would it work on Virgin for, its EE"....you've got to love it, great customer service there, wouldn't even let me try it out - made me wonder why they were quiet on a relatively busy Sunday, a month away from Christmas lol.

So yeah, if your a Virgin Mobile customer, my experiences within EE stores has been great, they tried my sim out without trying to sell me a ridiculous contract, they didn't ask any questions and actually knew what they were talking about. I reckon they'd do the same in other big(ish) cities. I work in Sheffield so I'm hoping they're as helpful too and more importantly, have the white one in stock...here's hoping.

    Cheers,

    Kash

Well i finally gave up and ordered a sim free note 2. I don't suppose Nokia are bothered but i would have chose the 920 over any other phone (even though techradar voted it 8th best phone). Anyways god only knows how many sales nokia lost through this exclusivity deal, i hope the pay check was enough to keep them in business. Maybe next time....

Thank you whiZ, your tip paid off, I got my lumia 920 with a free wireless charger and WESC headphones from Woolwich branch (ex Orange). Initially they didn't know anything about a free charger, but I insisted to scan it, which then was automatically discounted. Don't bother to try Dartford's EE shop, they are unhelpful. treating the shop as a family business, very unprofessional. Good luck!

Your welcome danishUk/Dantes. If anyone else plans on getting one from the EE (Orange) store in Woolwich, ask for Corey (if memory serves correct) he was very helpful. I got mine on Thurs, 22nd Nov. He might remember me, I came in with my kid and it probably took over an hour to get everything processed.

going to pop down today and see if I can get one. Has anyone managed to get a white one, my friend has a black already and I was hoping to get a Red really but I know EE only do the Black and White ones and I heard the white was contract only.
If I cant get a white I will wait till January when the EE exclusivity ends.

Hello mate, where did you get the white one from? Please say its somewhere near Nottingham or Sheffield. I'm an idiot for passing on the black one on Sunday thinking I'd be able to get a white one - little did I know that every store in Nottm/Sheff would sell out of the black one in the space of a day too...

It's a pity the Orange price plans are pretty poor compared to the likes of Giffgaff or 3 or else I'd be on this in a minute.

Great phone, pity about the exclusivity deal.

I ordered online via EE when they mispriced it at £19.99 instead of £199 with a 12 month 4G contract.

Lightning fast, youtube videos download as soon as the video opens.

aah, I wanted this on PAYG as I'm a virgin mobile customer and would be daft to lose the sim only deal I get at the moment.

This sounds like one hell of a phone though. I really want the white one and I'd rather wait and get what I want instead of compromising on the black one.

Just as a side note, a lot of sales reps bang on about this model working on 4G only - they're completely wrong - it supports both, I've seen it with my own eyes....I wish I had a pic to prove it but I'm rocking a Nokia god knows what from god knows when with no camera. For anyone out there on a Virgin mobile contracts after the white version, go out and ask them to try it out for you....most of the reps I've spoken to have been amazing and were happy to try it out. Some were surprised to see it work themselves...good luck with finding one to buy though lol

Got mine in Black this afternoon at EE store (ex t-mobile) on Old Broad Street (Near Liverpool Street) in London.

Initially the guy said that EE didn't do it on PAYG then he checked the price book and found that Orange were doing it.

Couldn't find that Wireless charger was on the PAYG offer but decided to give it to me for free (in black) as I was spending £400. Also got the Headphones but that was definitely part of the offer.

Funny thing is the guy serving me and his colleague were discussing the fact it was much better deal to get it on PAYG rather than spending over £500 to get it fully unlocked.

Pretty happy with the deal. Just need to get a virgin sim using TCB via carphonewarehouse. Will ride it out with virgin until the phone can be unlocked.

Westfield Stratford City out of stock didn't know what I was going on about. Said its not on PAYG only contract.

Try East Ham - there are two EE shops on main street and both had 920 in stock as pAYG

Hi everyone. My son wants one of these and is already on Virgin. I was under the impression it was a microsim phone. Is that right? How easy is it to cut it down a normal sim?

    So close, yet so far!

I have a phone on order with Clove. An unlocked, sim free, unbranded handset, but it costs £520. :( The cost has never sat quite right with me. It works out slightly more expensive than buying PAYG from EE, once I take into account unlocking fees, running two contracts for 3 months, then cancelling my current one.

Anyway, I decided to pop into the EE store in Bootle Strand (see above) and decided if they had it on PAYG, with the freebies, I was going to get it. I just couldn't wait and I would somehow manage the network lock issues.

They had it, with freebies, no questions asked! Until it got to the till - it wouldn't go through the system as PAYG, contract only. I'd have to re-order a PAYG version, but their system was down and I couldn't even do that. So I left empty handed. :(

Maybe it's fate. Maybe I was meant to stick with the Clove handset.

    Thanks for the link benznet

I've just got back fron Leadenhall market branch in City of London. I bought a black PAYG for £410 with £10 top up. Went through the til no problem with free headphones and charger. Will be trying to cut down my sons virgin sim over the weekend. The only other store in the city I could get through to with them in stock is Kensington where they had 2 black ones but the lady who answered the phone didnt know about the free charger.

Just rang virgin mobile. They are sending me a microsim instead of cutting down the existing sim. They also said if i wanted to pay to get the phone unlocked they would pay for it! ! Asked about the deal my son was on for £5 a month which was 125/500/250mb. Upgraded him to 200/unl/2.5gb data for an extra 99p!
