Not wishing to cast a dampener here, but I really just don't 'get' these things - why not just use a smartphone instead?

Cheers guy's . This is my first attempt at a deal and didn't know how to link to a picture .I've just placed an order for one as it doesn't seem a bad deal . It'll replace my Nokia 770 .

Old model that has been surpassed by new technology, as already said buy a smartphone
#6
You'd be much better off with an ipod touch IMO.
#7
The size of screen and it's resolution make using one of these for the internet a much more pleasant experience than a smartphone...

It also makes for an excellent ebook reader

just got this e-mail :]

Good media player, great screen size/resolution, convenient, good price, no contract to worry about, makes more sense to me than a netbook.

These things are invaluable to have when on holiday , long battery life and a good way of keeping in touch with the family when abroad . I took my 770 to turkey last year and was able to surf the net and send emails easy from the hotel lounge , no big laptop to hump around and the screen size is much better than a smartphone .I have Maemo Map on mine with a BT GPS reciever and we knew exactly where we were when traveling around . The 810 is even better as it has a cam and built in GPS and there is loads of software for these things .

same price at Play btw

The N810 is still current for the moment, though there are rumours of a new model in the autumn with 3G or similar.

As for it being surpassed by a smartphone, it really depends on what you want to do; the N810 has a bigger screen and keyboard, built-in GPS, can act as a USB host and runs (essentially) Debian Linux on an ARM. There's also a flash plugin.
#13
I take it one of these would connect adequatley to my AOL wireless broadband?

surely if thats a yes then this is the reason why they are better than a smartphone as then you arent getting charged to use it?
#14
As long as you are in range of a public wifi access point:-
Skype, Internet Radio, IM (email and web browsing if you're ok with the 4.3" screen).

In addition, when connected to your home network through wifi:-
Streaming music (compare the price to other streaming music solutions).
Music and video playing from the internal or SD card storage.

This is an ARM-based Linux computer, so you can use it to SSH and VNC to other machines amongst other things.
This is by no means for everyone, most people will be better off with a netbook and/or a smart phone.
#15
Free postage at Play.com so works out cheaper

Why not go the whole hog and get a netbook?!

Why not go the whole hog and get a netbook?!

I got one for size and battery life, it fits in your pocket and you forget about it until you need it and the battery life is 4x a netbook. As has been said before its fantastic as a holiday tool.

Being Linux based there are now tones you can do with it: http://talk.maemo.org/index.php

I have an N800 which is better than the N810 in my view as it takes 2 full SD instead of one mini SD which gives loads more storage
#18
Can this be used as a mobile phone too?
#19
No there's nowhere to put a SIM in it, these are brilliant a lot of schools are now using these as cloud devices check out a company called Sanako they use these to run a mobile classroom and for students to do homework assignments on etc really very cool stuff.

If I wasn't buying a new car i'd have one

Unless you get a smartphone which is wireless? This is old tech as far as I'm concerned but it might be suitable for some scenarios. Personally I'd put the money toward a better phone.

£130 seems a bit of a bargain to me especially with all the WiFi spots available now.
#22
does this have built in IR?

Dunno, I still don't know why people stay in tents when there's perfectly decent hotels they could use instead.... choice maybe?

A smart phone with 800x480 screen which can show full websites, not mobile versions, for anywhere near this price?
As for calling people, I have a drawer full of phones i can use for that purpose, most of which don't look like I have a brick attached to my face.

yeah like n90 that was on 20£ 18months contract on 3

Way better than an iphone and at least as good as a netbook. Mini usb adapter allows you to connect a foldable keyboard or 16gb flash drive and probably even a broadband dongle although i haven't tried it yet. Responsiveness is good, web is fast, programs such as km player allow me to watch skynews and god rest it's soul setanta sports news with no stutter. Plenty of different applications for it that still keep coming, and you don't have to pay for them. Not sure i'd pay this price- got mine for £79.97 from pc world in one of these sales where supposedly the stuff doesn't exist or the staff nab it all and you goons vote it cold because your local store doesn't have any in stock.
#27
Is it possible to get MSN messenger working on this? Or any of the poker sites (FTP, etc...)?
#28
Can we make skype to skype calls using WIFI?

To those saying buy SmartPhone or iPhone - these things are expensive (either to buy or via contract).

The Nokia is really only for use around the house, is cheap and involves a one-off payment.

Also, the iPhone's resolution is poor compared to the Nokia's 800 x 480 res. I personally think eben Netbooks have too small a resolution too be truly usable, never mind an iPhone! I'd hate to surf the net for long period of time on one.

And then there's the slideout keyboard!
#31
whats the music playback like on one of these and how big are they compared to an ipod touch? quite like the idea of this if i hadn't just got an N97

I did see an Xperia go on eBay yesterday for £180, and that ticks all the boxes above, although it does only have a 3" screen.
#33
I've just seen you can install Android on these....now I'm quite tempted to buy one just for blogging whilst on holiday
#34
I have an axim x51v pocket pc that does the same job as this...

I can't see any iPhones that have gone for £180, not ones with GPS anyway

Couple of questions:

What browser does it use (Opera?) and will it saves passwords and cookies for, say, HUKD?

Does this connect to WPA encrypted wireless networks OK?

What does it offer over the N800 (which I've seen go on ebay for £60 second hand)?

Thanks

As long as you are within range of a public wifi access point, yes.
Before I bought a 3 Skypephone S2, I was using one as a mobile, always on, Skype phone. As it's an ARM-based machine, it doesn't use much power at all and probably won't cost more than a phone to leave on.

I can pair my N800 with my Bluetooth phone (S2) and, I assume, I should be able to connect to the internet that way if there's no wifi access available.

Horses for courses ,personally i prefer my N95 , wireless, skype , msn, gps , etcetc but for those that want something like this i guess its a good price , VOTED HOT for the price, but for me if it would have had a sim card slot it wouldve been a much much better device.
