This is quite good if you want walking directions too, can pre-download a whole UK map for free and get transport times if online, with minimal data.
co pilot is aweful, yes I bought it what a mistake. This is quite good, hope they polish before m$ kill the nokia brand
Many thanks, looks very good will try it on the way to work in a few days.
Really good spot. Used it today and the live traffic was bang on. Outrageously, CoPilot want to charge for this feature once you have used the trial of it!

Only missing feature are speedcams but there is an alert that goes off if you exceed the limit (not me, obviously).

Highly recommended.
Worth a try, heat added.

Grammar is useful when writing sentences. It gives the rest of us a chance to understand what you are talking about.
You cannot share pre recorded videos in Whatsapp...you can upload the videos to YouTube though and share the link via Whatsapp (Nokia YouTube upload tool)
Can't change which ringtone? Whatsapp, or system? If you want to change the system ringtone, download Nokia Ringtone Editor
Nokia Music is hardly a total flop! It is free, and is my go to app for music discovery.
Any other 'issues'?

Nokia Drive/Maps work without a data connection --- making them useful in countries where my friends phones were useless (demonstrated in Amsterdam this weekend, when we got lost in a drunken haze...I flicked down to our hostel location that I had pinned to the start screen...and voila, walking directions back to the hostel!)

The two free satnav apps available on android also work without a data connection in the UK and abroad, so you are giving out some very one-sided and misleading information there about phone satnavs.

Nokia Drive doesn't even have speed camera warnings which you can get for free on Android by downloading one of the free offline satnavs available for it. Without speed camera warnings you have to be careful otherwise your nokia phone may end up costing you a lot more than you bargained for.

Or just don't speed? Nokia Drive has the speed notifications...it makes a bing bong noise when you go above the speed limit on that particular road. Nokia are bringing over all of the enhancements from the Symbian version...so it will continue to evolve and improve.
As for the free drive applications on Android - given that most users stick with Google Maps, those fuller featured apps are kind of useless when in a foreign city. They were certainly useless to us in Amsterdam - where my friends didn't even bother getting their phones out as they knew Google Maps wouldn't work.
I guess that's the difference....on Android, it is perfectly feisible to find a viable alternative. But you have to go searching for it. Also, how extensive is the coverage for those sat navs? Nokia Drive+ turn by turn works in 111 countries if memory serves me. & the POI database works in offline mode too.
I'm certainly not saying Nokia Drive is the best, or Windows Phone for that matter....but you have to try much harder on Android to achieve the same goals in my experience (I've owned an Xperia Arc S and a Galaxy Note 2)

Easy to say don't speed but 2 million people are caught speeding every year and have to pay fines. Speed notification is not the same as speed camera warnings. As you know what speed notifications sound like on your phone it means you have speeded as most people have from time to time, so it's easy to say don't speed but quite another to practice what you preach.

So they still haven't bought the enhancements from Nokia Drive Symbian to the Windows Phone version? People have been complaining for years that the symbian version is better and that's still the case it seems.

Your friends should have downloaded Mapfactor Navigator or Navfree on Android before they left the UK. Actually they should have downloaded one of those apps as soon as they got their phones. It only takes a few minutes to get those apps on your phone so there really is no excuse.

Nokia Drive doesn't cover more countries as you claim. It actually covers less. Navigator on Android covers over 200 countries, so nearly twice as many as Nokia Drive and all offline too.

My point was...Nokia Drive has the sounds to warn you that you ARE speeding -- whereas a speed camera database simply tells you about known speed cameras. What about mobile speed cameras? Nokia Drive's system where you know when you are speeding on particular roads is far preferable in my opinion than simply knowing where some speed cameras are located.

Don't get me wrong; I can certainly see your point - it would be great to have some of the features found in other sat navs. But quite honestly, I just got really frustrated with Android in so far as I was always looking around trying to find apps that would plug the gaps that other ones didn't fill. Google Maps was a perfect example...and none of the navigation apps at the time ever satisfied my needs (mainly because they didn't integrate well with the rest of the system...i.e., when a call came in and then ended, I would have to fumble about with my phone to get the navigation screen on again.

Since I would never stump up for an iPhone (expensive for no real benefit), Windows Phone has filled my requirements quite nicely. It's easy to say that Nokia should have brought all the features over to Windows Phone -- but then again, Nokia have been going through some SERIOUS upheaval...so bringing over 6 years of development to an entirely new platform (and doing such a good job of it so far) is good going in my opinion.

(By the way, I haven't had a speeding ticket for almost 9 years....so that is why I don't consider the lack of a speed camera database to be an issue --- but I completely understand why it would be an issue for some).

One other point....you mentioned Navigator on Android --- I just searched on google, and came up with a huge number of alternative sat navs. I couldn't find Navigator (and therein lies the problem really. Sometimes, too much choice isn't a good thing)

Actually I should have called the app Mapfactor and not Navigator, so my mistake. Try searching for mapfactor instead and you will find it easily.

That update just came through for me...it now seems to support landscape as well as portrait view
(Hopefully Nokia will take that concept and apply it to the Nokia Music app...would be great to have a landscape view as portrait only makes it awkward when using it in the car!)

Excellent, just what I've been waiting for. Lumia 620 got to the point where I could hardly use the phone due to the memory being full of 'other'. Looks as if this will solve that. Thanks

I have just tested it on my girlfriends Lumia 620, and it works perfectly (her phone hasn't yet received the latest firmware from Nokia that installs the Storage Check app into the settings menu).
I'm really pleased with the way Nokia are dealing with Windows Phones shortcomings....hopefully Microsoft will step up to the plate in future releases, and leave Nokia to focus on more important things!

I already did that...some had disappeared from the store altogether and some were free for me but now I'd have to pay for them.

I would let Nokia Store know about this.
They should be able to put it back for you. It will not be straight away, but do email them and chase them, they will be able to sort that out for you.
There might be compatibility issue with some apps, but if they are compatible and showing as available for your phone in store, and you have already purchased it once, do email customer support mate.

Be careful when you do upgrade to Belle....inspite of Nokia PC Suite backing up my Nokia at the time of upgrading, it somehow managed to lose all my apps/games and their licenses - and I am unable to download half of them again withouth paying. Marvellous.

Its not often I would advocate getting cracked copies of apps/games....but in this instance I have little choice.

As its a clean install, all your C drive data will go. But as long as you have download them from NOKIA (ovi) store, you will be able to download them again without any problem. Just log on to store via your phone and go to my stuff and it all will be there. Unless its not supported by belle, you wont get it.
:-)

you really cant compare symbian on a 5800 to the new upgraded symbian, there is a huge difference.
True, S60 3rd is better than any non-touch ui out there tbh and s60 5th edition (5800, n97) was an utter mess. S^3 is much improved but I think its too late to restore faith in symbian. Still better than wp7 imo - has carbide c++, widget, qt and qml support - wp7 is tied down to an anchor.

Same here. Moved from 5800 to android and it feels like freedom.

Got to agree with all the Nokia haters I'm afraid.

I moved from the N97 to the iPhone 4 and the difference is like night and day.

The main difference is iPhone OS works whereas Symbian doesn't!!!

Also, the E7 will be £20 pm after a few weeks so a very bad deal

Pr2.0 is coming in april. Pr1.2 is coming out for those handsets who missed the pr1.1 release (tescos branded one).

Mine is an unbranded n8 and it has never changed language ...
I would pay £285 for Tesco one and unlock for £20.

This is a decent phone, nearly all reviews comment on how well made and solid it is - I would agree that it is well made because it has an aluminium body and gorilla glass instead of the usual cheap plastic you get with HTC. Currently there is PR1.2 level firmware available but in the next couple of months there is a PR2.0 update coming with updated browser and general usability improvements.

And of course the camera is absolutely miles better than any other phone camera.

I would vote hot for this phone but there is a cheaper route via the Tesco one.

Edited By: androoski on Mar 23, 2011 17:42: More info
It just goes to show how personal things like mobile phones are. My wife has this phone and I've played with it many times. My experiences (and hers) are the exact opposite to yours. :)

This is also nearly £32 cheaper than the one from Play.com. (Including P&P and Quidco.) Plus I don't know if Play offer the 2 year warranty.

Edited By: Sponge on Mar 23, 2011 17:04: gcundfyn
I had this phone and it was dire!

Symbian remains a horrible thing to use. The phone itself feels cheaply made. My N8 randomly changed its language when it felt like. One minute it would work ok then a second later it would go scandinavian.

Took it back and got a Desire HD. Far better phone and Androis a far better OS
Not voted as haven't use this version of Symbian, but I've been disappointed with older versions.

I'd pay this IF I could get Android on it, but I know that's never going happen. . .

nothing (i mean nothing!) beats the N900 browsing experience, especiallly when clocked at 1GHz. the iphones and androids are flashy and nice to use, but its all well and good on mobile sites with my old N95 could hadle without breaking a sweat.

Try loading a full desktop website and they will struggle. The N900 handles, youtube almost the same as my desktop, plus with samba i can stream from/to my n900 to my pc.

Do you need a Lense to see the desktop version on your N900? what would you do with your N900 clocking at 1ghz? has N900 got access to 100 thousand apps as did Iphone or Android?

the fact is that Nokia ditched their own OS. If Nokia were as optimistic as you Nokia should still be producing MeeGo or Symbian devices. But Nokia did not realize a future in them. Albeit Nokia made a statement that they still provide a support to Symbian, its only to soothe their investors and to tackle a sudden drop in their share price. Sooner or later Nokia will announce they are abandoning their support for Symbian and MeeGo.

No, the N900 web browser has this little thing called zooming - you press a button and the elements on the page get bigger!! Cutting egde stuff!

Clocking the N900 1Ghz makes rendering webpages and the whole phone snappier (by enough for a phone released in 2009 to be able to come close to some of the latest phones currently on the market).

The N900 runs Linux - properly unlike android. Which means, 99% of the apps you download for your fancy iphone/android like controlling your pc (ssh) etc are already present on it, and the remaining apps can be easily adapted to run on it, there are more USEFULL apps for the N900 than there will ever be for the iphone or android.

As for the future of Meego/symbian that remains to be seen.
True, that was the main attraction of the n900 for me - a proper terminal and ssh/ftp access out the box made it more like a portable computer unlike other smartphones.

Very valid points baldude - I tip my hat to you. Will see ofcourse where the phone market goes over this next year but the excessive bashing of nokia handsets seems the norm to 99/100 people - often unjustified. The n8 showed big changes in nokia's thought process and their aim to actually get a good phone out for once but people still think of the failed phones from s^1 so give them the palm...

well, did i ever tell you that I was a nokia fanboy? I really liked all my old Nokia's cause in their contemporary times they were just brilliant. My last one Nokia N95 was a star the first one to combine a music player, dvd quality video, GPS and 8GB of space (micro sd). But the N95 was like a tide it rose and rose and rose and only to fall. I'd never seen another mastery work such as N95 released in the market to compete in contemporary other mobiles.
But today, I neither support Nokia, Android nor IOS.
I only support a system that justifies its usability and pricing.
rant over.

in my opinion Nokia should not have put all its eggs in one basket as far as WP7 is concerned as good as it maybe. MeeGo os would have given nokia its own identity.
The Nokia n900 is a better phone than the n8 in many ways apart from the bizzare choice of a resistive screen. So Nokia can still make great phones as the n900 proved.

well, a £80 Orange San Francisco has a capacitive screen, 3yrs old Apple phone has a capacitive. why the resistive. having a smooth running OS was the thing of competition when the first OS cameout. It is all now a standard for a smart phone. Today's competition is all about providing the apps to do normal things. If my daily routine is to check my stock prices, my twitter, facebook updates and mails I need an app so that i can do these at just one touch on my smartphone and I dont need to log in to my laptop for each to get the information.
Nokia has failed in yesterday's competition (to come with good hardware), todays competition (to come with good apps)....who knows what the tomorrows competition is going to be....beware when tomorrow comes, the things of copetition in yesterday and day before are standard tomorrow.

Samsung chat £ 60 inc £ 10 credit phones4u unlocked de branded with wifi.
having a wi-fi would not certainly make this mobile worth £130.
Resistive screen and VGA resolution are still a bit let down. oh do not talk about symbian please.
I moved away from Nokia 5800 to Orange San Francisco. I can not believe how slick the internet browsing on android can be. browsing on Nokia 5800 was pain in the back. Nokia's Stack browser sucks so do Opera on symbian.
All Symbian OS phones with WiFi support BBC iplayer this should be no different. I reckon it should work very well as Nokia Symbian phones were the first to get the iplayer and have been optimised to do so over the last two years. They support flash lite of which BBC iplayer runs on flash.
