New versions of this ereader don't I believe have the SD slot and are therefore less easy to modify by rooting etc?

Have had one of these for nearly 2 years (Since Curry's had their £29.99 clearance deal). Nice piece of kit. Just back from Spain and reading by the pool with this was a pleasure and, personally, I really like the page forward / back buttons on either side of the screen rather than swiping every page turn.

It works really well with Calibre to load a library of books and can handle the epub format which most UK libraries lend their ebooks in. (As I understand it Amazon are still holding out for more money before they'll allow them to lend Kindle compatible ebooks).

My wife has the Kindle Paperwhite but TBH unless you read a lot in bed, I don't see a huge need for the backlit screen. Buy this for under £30 and don't worry if you do ever accidentally break or lose it.

I did also try hacking this and you can get a simple Android web browser and email client on it; but for anyone who'll still be carrying their smartphone, the experience isn't great and I ended up restoring the Nook to factory settings.

Bottom line - It's just an eReader and it's a darned good one for this price.

Make you right pretty much, although I did go for the glowlight in the end so as to have the light option - plus I'm a sucker for technology. I was originally going to go down the root option but now I've worked out how to use Calibre (which once you get used to is a breeze) I couldn't see much point in running the risk of bricking it. Always interested to hear of people's opinions of such things.

Brand new with free postage for £29 from Blackwells...

No denying that's a deal with it being new stock and presumably covered by 12month guarantee/warranty (whatever the difference is) - no mention of the SD card slot though which may be of no consequence to some, but to those looiking to root etc?

It does have an SD card slot, and you can root it easily using NookManager. I paid £32.50 from Blackwells including First Class P&P. For the sake of a few quid, a brand new one with a guarantee seems like the obvious choice.

My mistake then and apologies for misleading anyone. The relauched Glow version doesn't have a slot and I assumed that the non-glow was the same - looks like there is no new non-glow and it's been discontinued?

That being the case, it's Blackwells for an additional 9 months cover for an extra £6.55. Close call!

Don't think it's applicable to Nooks

It can be handy. I was learning Spanish and used it with Ankidroid (a flash card program) so I could learn in the garden in the sun. It's also funny seeing tetris on an ereader (similar videos on youtube)

No problem.

To root or not to root - I haven't done it yet for 2 reasons. 1 - I'm a coward. 2 - the instructions are for this model and I have the Glow version.

If you look at the link here to the Glowlight deal others have posted other links.

I haven't rooted it also because to be honest I haven't seen the need yet. Using Calibre I can get content on to the Nook easily enough.

Haven't received my Nook yet. But people say you can use android app on Nook after root?

To me, most important thing to get books. Any book website you can recommend?

Probably others who can help more with the technical stuff but my understanding is that you will be able to use certain android apps, yes. How well they will work or how much use they will be is another matter. If you've got a phone or tablet then that's probably going to be better for most things. The Nook also has no audio capability.

I have used a kindle for quite a while and would consider rooting so as to be able to view kindle content via the kindle app, but there are other ways.

Project Guttenburg is great for out of copyright and hence legal ebooks.
