I'm considering giving them a go because of the snoopers charter and virgin deciding what websites I'm not allowed on but not sure how well regarded these are.

PIA (Private internet access) is user friendly, priced in £s and only £30 a year anyway. By the time you have paid a currency conversion fee you maybe be cheaper going with PIA as they are definitely 1 of the best.

I recommend Torguard, great service from them.

I'd probably give them a miss, lots of reports of dropped connections and awful speeds on their network. PIA are pretty good. Also it's not virgin who are deciding what websites you visit, they're just doing what they are told.

If this is all you want then opera's rubbish vpn mode is all you need. Costs zero.

another vote for PIA, best I have used.

some of the sites I visit have torrents and I'd want privacy when using those to obtain content too - not just browsing

This is bad advice. Don't listen to this. A VPN client such as PIA or the one suggested in the post provides a proxy for all incoming connections from the network.

Maybe the man just wants to watch his dodgy porn without Theresa May watching over his shoulder. Though I agree that browser based proxies/VPNs are less than ideal, especially with how cheap a proper service can be had for.

Also worth looking on StackSocial for deals on VPNs, I got 3 years of VPN unlimited for 20$ around 18 months ago.

lol...

"I'm considering giving them a go because of the snoopers charter and virgin deciding what websites I'm not allowed on"... You said this. This is a quote from you. You never said '...and torrenting too'.

@people who can read: if all you want to do is avoid the snoopers charter, both website blocking and website logging, then dont waste money on a vpn.

Admittedly I didn't reference it directly as my personally intended use but I did mention "There are servers specifically for P2P, torrent, and streaming use."

Sorry for killing the world...
