I wouldn't put this rubbish on my machine if your were paying ME £19.99 !!!!

Quote for the sheer truth.

If there's any AV protection that I will splash out on, it's NOD32 by far.

Anyone recommend a good free one? or at least an inexpensive one?

Norton Anti Virus is awful, as many will tell you it takes over your computer and slows it down.

Try Kaspersky Anti Virus on a great deal here

Why pay for something when AVG is free? I have used AVG for years and never had a virus attack. I download all the time too.

Some free anti virus software is good however I use Kaspersky myself and have found it to be excellent. Sometimes you get a good deal more protection in all areas of your pc and web surfing/downloading from commercial anti virus software tham from the free stuff.

AVG gets my vote and they do free anti spyware too. ZoneAlarm for a free firewall with a great e-mail spam filter as well and you're sorted for nowt:thumbsup:

Download ZoneAlarm from PCWorld site:

Sorry voted cold, horrible software. If it was a choice between Norton and no protection, I would choose no protection everytime!

I use ActiveVirusSheild for my AV which is free and based on Kaspersky's virus engine www.activevirusshield.com

Are you using Chairman Bill's IE for surfing? I've always used Opera (with Comodo) and never had a problem:-D
You can use Avast! to scan downloaded files by clicking on them.

I think all the people who are making the statements have used full pack of Norton AV. there Internet security sucks and they are main reason behind slowing down the machine. but if you know how to configure it than its a great piece of s/w.

I don't know if it is still the case but Norton AV used to offer virus updates only ONCE PER WEEK for home users. So if a virus or trojan variant is released on Thursday you are exposed to it until the following Wednesday when the new release is made available. After 6 viruses / trojans arrived undetected on my system (common sense meant I recognised them as such without opening them) I switched to AVG and I have not had a problem since. Free AVG updates automatically once per day.

As a professional in this area I would advise that if you want to pay for a solution it's Kaspersky EVERY time - Steganos is a rebadged Kaspersky at a cheaper price, so that is also worth considering.

This is excellent free antivirus software or try the AVG as suggested, use zonealarm and something like spyware terminator and you should have no problems...having said that I use Kaspersky Internet Security Suite it is good value and one of the highest rated suites available, found a link somewhere around here for it at £29.99.
Recommend www.download.com, check out the reviews, and make your choice...

Have to vote cold, never heard anything good about Norton lol!

I use Zone alarm now after I bought a legit code off ebay from the USA for 3 quid :) also turned out its valid for updates for the next 40 YEARS! Bargain! I would recommend other people having a look on ebay ...

Used to use free software which did nearly a good as job:

Avast! Antivirus
Commondo Firewall
Spyware Blaster
Windows Defender
A squared
Ad-aware 2007 free version

[ Still use the last 4, you can never have enough antispyware programs :) ]

If yor thinking about buying kasperskys then get Setganos it uses the kasperskys engine so it basically the same software just looks different. It offers the same protection as kaspersky but costs less. Doesn't work on vista yet, you'll have to use kaspersky.
