as most members advise...get free AVG anti virus and free Zone Alarm firewall and avoid Norton's system draining products.
#2
Good price for a product that some people find useful.

I predict an uproar of people criticising norton......

:whistling:
#3
Yep its for the average Joe!!
#4
I agree. For that reason a lot of people like the software and this is a good price!
#5
Zonealarm and Spybot do a better job and are completely free.
#6
LOL.

We get the norton vs. free alternatives every time someone posts norton software! (Including one I posted in the past)

I'm sure that everyone is aware that there are cheaper / free alternatives out there. But for someone who wants Norton this is a great price.

YES some people actually do like Norton - I find that it's a great piece of software for my family to use as it doesn't require much input from the user.

YES some people hate Norton, but probably the best place to discuss the good and bad points of Norton and other similar software is in the "Miscellaneous musings..." part of the forum.

Thanks for the post Haywood73. I've added an image. Please see the link in my sig for help on that :)

markwills....got it right!! LOL...not sure if Norton has improved with later editions but the one I had installed only updated the virus definitions once a week so chances were that I'd have picked up a new virus before Norton had updated...the one I have now (kaspersky freebie) updates everytime I boot up.

Bargain. Make sure to check for vista compatibility before you buy if you are thinking of upgrading to vista.

It's never been the same since they took Peter Norton off the box!
#10
lol all of the security suites have thier flaws, all have the problems, and all miss certain threats.

Buy whatever u want, and hope for the best! lol.

But out of the box this wont work with vista, but they have released a download which will if you supply your product key.

good price too, tho its probaby an oem version :) so no telephone support from symantec on this one! :)
#11
I used to use Norton and was pretty happy with it but moved to zonealarm as it was free and less resource hungry, not massively happy with it, for one the free version does not allow me to use mIRC.

They are trying to entice me into purchasging there software but i must refuse!!!
#12
While there are better and cheaper alternatives out there I have to admit this is a great price for this software and that is why I have voted hot.

Personally I work in IT and use ZoneAlarm and Avast for firewall and anti virus but for people who want an AIO solution which is user friendly then this is a great price.

Voted Cold as I work with Haywood73 and he hasn't a scooby doo!!!:w00t:

I must be missing something here. A quick search on Froogle shows me you can get the OEM version of this software for WELL under £20, eg:

Did you use the live update or activate it.I get updates nearly everyday from my Norton software.
If you were always getting viruses you must have had your firewall settings too low and also besides Norton you also need a spyware programme running along side it.I have Webroot`s Spy Sweeper which is a good piece of software.

Do you know what the OEM stands for? as it looks like its an add on. As they are selling the Norton Internet Security 2007 also.
#18
OEM is "Original Equipment Manufacturer". In the case of software, it just just means you get the CD only - i.e. no box or packaging. You still get your normal 1 year license. For most software, the instruction manual is either included on the CD or downloadable from the manufaturer website, so not a problem.

Thanks :-D

As already mentioned, just in case anyones looking for a free option, here's the links -

AVG for antivirus http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Zonealarm for firewall http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

Windows Defender for spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

If you insist on paying for this stuff, Id recommend BitDefender - do some research, generally along with Nod32 it comes out top and not a bloater like Norton!
#21
...and which one of these firewalls/anti-virus/anti-sptyware programs provides spam control or parental control?
#22
BitDefender does spam, and is much less of a bloater than Norton - wont slow your PC down :) Not sure about parental control, there's sure to be freeware that covers it.

I would like to thank russ for the links to AVG and zonelabs and also anyone else who recommened them. We have had Norton on our Dell laptop since we brought it. We run on talktalk broadband and have had one or two problems of late. Dell asked us to do a reinstall and we lost Norton. We have put the AVG and zonelabs programs on in place of Norton and been amazed at the improve speed in start up, shut down and use on the internet once the programs got used to our sites and settings. Thanks again, woodview.
#24
Voted cold because Norton is so crap.
#25
thank you just ordered one. rightly or wrongly, i have always been pleased with norton
#26
I use Kaspersky Suite - was about 12 pounds OEM from Aria.

Have they fixed what I thought was the real fatal flaw of Norton ? That is that you can only update via going online and doing an auto-update ?

I had 2006 I think - and if you re-installed towards the end of the year - you are online downloading the patch (was 130 MB at the time!) - whilst being basically unprotected to any web-virus that had appeared since the original program was released !

Personally, I've just ordered F-Secure Internet Security Suite 2007 from Scan Computer for £11.69 delivered.

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=514119

That to me is a bargain, especially as F-Secure is generally rated as one of the top Security Suites.

Agreed. Cheap crap is still crap.

To be honest if you want the best anti virus software out there go for Eset's NOD32. In test after test it detected threats that none of the other virus checkers did, including Norton, Mcafee, AVG etc etc.

You do have to pay for it, £23 for a year direct from their website. It does update itself every hour which gives as much piece of mind as you can have at the moment I think!!

Have a look at the comparisons here (especially missed in-the-wild threats) and see if you still think AVG is such a good option!! :)

http://www.eset.com/products/compare.php

Obviously this is on Eset's website so it could be a little biased but read independent reviews and they all agree that NOD32 is the best out there and it wins numerous antivirus awards. It also takes up the least amount of system resources and scans the quickest. There's a free 30 day trial to be had as well

On the downside it is not the most user freindly piece of kit, although it is pretty much install and forget about and it is only an anti-virus it does not offer firewall functions

There are still a lot of people out there who like the Norton products and for your average Joe they are probably a fairly good choice although there are better ones out there.

Ordered this for my sis's new laptop CHEERS :-)
#31
can this be used as a subscription renewal?

or would i need a full uninstall/reinstall?
#32
I've found NIS's anti spam to be highly effective after only around a week of training.

I'm looking at alternatives after having used NIS in the past and Kaspersky Internet Security's spam filter is quite lame in that it doesn't detect repeat spams until they have been reported as spam three or four times. The trial is nearing its end now so I'm back on the hunt for another complete package.

There are other packages but NIS is a good all-round package (with spam filter) with minimal user intervention, despite the slower startup and shutdown times it can cause on the average PC.
#33
Anybody know where my friend can get a good cheap MAC version or equivalent ?
#34
You can try NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2007 for free !
and then make up your own mind, on it's suitability for you,
by downloading a fully working copy of 15 day trialware from their U.S. site
(45mb) just needs a quick registration with a valid email address

http://shop.symantecstore.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=DisplayPage&Env=BASE&Locale=en_US&SiteID=symnahho&id=ProductDetailsTrialPage&productID=59771600

I am currently trialling it, and think it's a really good product, firewall antivirus and antispyware and anti phishing all in one package, I have had NO slow-down of my pc at all. (P4 3.0ghz HT)

Be aware that OEM copies are usually one pc licence, the full retail product allows installation on up to 3 family pc's, so may be more suitable
#35
Anyone order this and how long did it take to deliver?
#36
Personally used Norton b4. Since I have a REALLY low spec cpu, the software took most of my system resources. Ultra lag in games and took forever to scan for virus. Now changed to zonealarm, things are alot better. Not recommended to low spec cpus.

Didn't vote due to the fact it might be useful with high spec computers who love norton :)
#37
Also, anyone that wants to get Zonealarm....you can get the FULL Internet Security Suite for FREE using Trialpay. All you have to do is take up one of the affiliate offers via Zonelabs website and if it tracks properly then Zonelabs will sned you the licence key for 1 yr. I did it myself, and it works no probs.

My suggestion would be to book a car rental (or similar) for a few months in advance. Once you have your licence key from Zonelabs, cancel the booking. Myself, I bought an ink cartridge (£0 + £2.99 p&p) from Inkclubs. I received the licence key the very next working day.
