Why pay for Anti Virus software? There are plenty of respected, free programs out there.

Avira AntiVir Personal - http://www.free-av.com/
AVG Free - http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage
Avast! Home Edition - http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
Comodo - http://www.comodo.com/
Microsoft Security Essentials - http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

There are others, but the above are more than suitable for most users.

I think you'll find that newer versions don't use so many resources. I'm not a fan of Norton still, but it's unfair to jump on an age-old bandwagon and claim it hogs too many resources.

uses lots of resources and slows system down far more than the free ones mentioned above... I run over 100PCs and have tested extensively. Don't waste your money.... cold

no offence but you're full of it.

would like to see some proof of your findings cos every single review of a Norton 2010 product says its light on resources and very quick.

I have 360 V4 on my PC now and its using 10mb of RAM.
very very little considering Firefox is using 106mb

Not true in my experience.
The 2011 version is expected shortly (sept?) so price may go a little lower on this, although best price around at the moment if you need it now.

Interesting. Which resources are you referring to - paged pool memory, handles, threads? In the extensive testing, what was the yardstick used to reference against and how did the resources measure up? Would usage of a multi core CPU allow for an even distribution of the threads to improve efficiency of timeslicing?

You did specify "extensive" and spoke in the manner of being a professional hence it would be interesting to glean further information? On the other hand, there are good reasons to believe that you have just plucked out irrational statements out of thin air for the hell of it. You're not the only one though - plenty of illogical and unfounded comments in these forums.

I know but it is irritating when somebody makes an effort to post something and no matter how well or poorly received the deal is, there's no justifying that sort of denigration without any foundation. It's even worse for someone to make something up in order to pretend to be highly qualified.

100% agree. every time an internet security software deal is posted, no matter how good the price, it just turns into a fight between the 'free av' side and the 'paid for AV' side.

when it shouldnt be. the only comments allowed by the mods should be related to the product's price and availability elsewhere.
is it a good price for the product?
is the retailer reputable?

everything else should be erased as it quickly turns from a discussion to all out slanging over the differences between such products.

in the end tho, as business is there to make money. money funds R&D, pays employees and advertising.
a simple way of advertising is to give away a freebie, a sample product that shows of some of the features and abilities of the product.

like sample bits of pastie at Greggs.
get enough of these and you could make a full pastie.

what they want you to do tho, is try it, like it and BUY a whole pastie for yourself, then your friends and have them do the same.

its the same with internet security. there are VERY few firms who only offer a single free security program with all of the features, no nag to upgrade or buy.

Good price, good product, yes you can use free products, however, this is an integrated suite, the price, for relative peace of mind, is well worth it - in my opinion!

Unfairly cold, if somebody wants this then it's a good price.
