I decided to change my order to Novatech, for the 10 year warranty on the EVGA.

both look like good value
( they are both the 192 stream ones tho)
The 4870 for £143 is probs a better deal unless you were going to buy mirrors edge anyhow

edit: just so you know the EVGA returns place is in germany. Their turn around is very quick tho, but it does cost a bit to send a card out :(

Thanks for the returns info. :)

If you are playing at high resolutions (1080P and above) then the extra memory on the GTX260 will often provide more FPS than the 512MB 4870. The 192 Stream GTX260 was initially slaughtered as it was more expensive than the 512MB 4870 and offered similar if slightly worse performance. What is different with them is that they overclock very well, and they have more memory so deal better with high resolutions. At this price they are also cheaper so well worth considering.

Thanks, great deal! Nearly paid £200 each for a few of these last month - now I can get an extra one with the savings :p

A 10 year warranty when this card would barely survive 6 months? Plus you need a SLI to take full advantage of these here cards, not to mention, if you don;t have a souped up system, tailored to utilise this cards maximum potentia, you'll get roughly about the same speed as you do with an 8800 GT.

(speaking from experience) Oh and you'd also find it easier to power and fit the 8800GT into your computer. (However for most of you interested in this card, needless to say, you already have taken into account the power demands and slot space of this card).

Good price though.

10 year warranty?? We won't be using graphics cards in 10 years! They will have invented an ESP interface by then that sends the images staraight to your brain. Or something that plugs into your neck like in The Matrix. Just like being there. :)

I have heard rumours that ATI are about to release some new cards in about 3 weeks time, it's possible that the old cards like the 4850 and 4870 MIGHT be in line for a price cut.
#16
its not worth the money these are old stock with 192cores and are 30% slower than the revised 216 you would be better off with the 4870 which novatech sell for £144 and thats nearly as fast as the 216 version.

What shall i do then? your old lady?

Speaking of your old lady, here's something she probably never taught you: "Don't be rude to people you don't know".

To be fair "Dont do Drugs" isnt so much being rude as giving sensible lifestyle advice.

Holding out for the price drop that may never come ;-)

to be fair, when he said 'dont do drugs' he could have meant himself.

anyway madonnaproject came up with some information i aint heard before, so rather than dishing out your personal life where it isnt needed (not doing drugs, for example)
it would be more appropriate if a valid response was given to the claims made by madonnaproject.

also, to be fair, i mentioned price cuts but not in the context you put it. no one else has mentioned a price cut. its a fair suggestion to go read the posts again.

fair enough?

awh...I bought this same one for £210 last month...!!

I think they are worth the money,

please share with us where you find that the 192 cores are 30% slower than the 216 core??

Are you refering to the 512mb 4870 or 1gb version??

Sorry Madonna, but despite your pleas, you must be either smoking something or on day-release. I base this on your own comments:

"A 10 year warranty when this card would barely survive 6 months?" If this card doesn't last you at least 2 years before the next big step, then you've got OCD. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this card and it will certainly last you much longer than the 6 months you're suggesting.

"Plus you need a SLI to take full advantage of these here cards" Come on, where do you get this info from? These are fully featured cards that do not need SLI to take full advantage. Gaming on anything up to 22" screen this card will be more than adequate, bigger than 22" then yes you may wish to go SLI, or get a different card (maybe a 280/285/295).

"not to mention, if you don;t have a souped up system, tailored to utilise this cards maximum potentia, you'll get roughly about the same speed as you do with an 8800 GT" Oh, so nearly close on that one. I'll grant you there's not much in it, but if you took a system with an 8800GT in it and dropped this card in, you would see an increase in FPS. Not much though. But you don't need the latest i7 technology with 24Gb RAM and 10 HDDs in RAID0 to get an improvement using this card over an 8800GT.

"Oh and you'd also find it easier to power and fit the 8800GT into your computer" In much the same way as you'll find it easier to fit a Mini into your double garage rather than a Landcruiser. The 260 is 10.5" long, the 8800gt 9". Both will fit into a standard ATX case.

Powerwise, they are comparable again, though you probably wouldn't want to put one onto your generic no-name 200w PSU.

I'd love to see where that little fact came from. None of the reports that I've seen (HardOCP/Anandtech etc) report anything over a 5-8% increase in performance between this and a 216 core

Thats what i thought too.

In most benchmarks the GTX260 "192 core" is about 5-10% slower than the "216 core". The memory interface and and type of memory remain unchanged at 448bit / 896MB so the only difference is those 24 unlocked shader cores.

Most gamers would not notice any difference between the versions because either card will play most game at 1920x1200 resolutions on highish settings. For the money it is great value - it closely matches the ATI 4870 cards but overclocks better (free extra performance) and now costs less. It also consumes a lot less power than the 4870's when idle.

I own a 4870 but would have bought a 260 if prices where lower when I needed the card.

Just typing in my card details into Novatech, but then froze and thought ~ hang on a minute, these are prices are coming down all over the place! I am gonna wait and see what else comes up in the next few weeks!

So tempted, but proud of myself for showing some restraint! (Always a first time!)

i'm not sure,

because Nvidia are releasing the 250gts/250gtx and if the 260's get any cheaper they will be same/cheaper than these slower cards. :?
#31
More likely these are to clear the last stock of the older GPU cores and then all the GTX260s will have 216 SP at the normal higher price. The same happened with some of the 7900GT`s there was a shortish run which I can`t remember the details as it was ages ago. The performance was close to the top end (at the time of release) but much cheaper but unfortunately went faulty after a couple of months and there were no replacements available so I ended up with Ati X1950.
#32
Good thing about EVGA is if your card goes faulty, and they have no replacements they upgrade it to the next card.

Well so i have heard on certain forums.
#33
Thanks to the OP for posting this. I cancelled my Ebuyer pre-order and bought this instead. I took the free delivery option and it arrived today!

I just upgraded from a 8800GTS and this is a big improvement, even on my PC that has a c**p mobo that doesn't even have PCI 2.0.

I didn't get a voucher for Mirrors Edge though :-(

I did'nt get a mirrors edge voucher,
It could be just a code somewhere as it's a download isn't it? "Download Via Enclosed Voucher".

Have you carefully checked, including all the paper work & invoice?

They may have run out, but contact them just to make sure. You can also ask in their forums where it'll be if included. Or, someone else who got it on here could answer this perhaps?
#36
I sent an email to Novatech support and they told me they would send out a Mirror's Edge voucher on Monday :)
