XFX Nvidia Geforce 8800GS. Not a bad card for the price. A little slower than the 8800GT, but around half the price.

Fixed the link, not sure how it got itself borked...

that is a very good price, i am contemplating purchasing two
#7
Would 2 of these in sli outperform, say zotac 8800gt 512mb?
#8
Great Price,

The site is now saying £60.74 so im guessing its going to be £6 P&P?

I doubt it, the memory is slower, and 2x384 isn't significantly bigger enough to make up the difference really.

It would! the 8800gt is about 20 % or so faster, while sli can be up to 50% faster, so two of these would be faster than the 8800 gt

Looking at the raw specs and not doing too much resarch, it appears there's a bigger jump than 20% between the GS and GT, and "up to" 50% really could mean anything.

Then again, it depends which GT it is being compared to.

When I googled this card, I found several reviews for the "XFX GeForce 8800 GS Alpha Dog XXX" - is this the same card ??
#13
this is ok but for only £35 delivered you can get a PCI e16 - Inno3D Geforce 8500GT 800MHz 512MB Graphics Card

no that's the overclocked version....product code is slightly different at the end.
very tempted by this as this is at the top end of my budget for a graphics card to replace my xfx 6800....
#15
hmm noisy fan and 2pin fan header means no fan control..
anyone know the watts load/idle for these cards?

There's no comparison between the 2 cards, this 8800GS being much better especially in gaming.

But the 8800GS obliterates the 8500GT, well worth the extra £35 for many times the performance. 8500GT's a good media centre card though, and that looks to be a decent price.

The 8800gs is a lot better and the 8500gt will struggle with games. This is an excellent price. On newegg it was $99.99 after rebate for the XFX 8800gs but they only ship in the US. Still, this is a decent deal.

that's the most low-end 8800-series on the market at the moment and at this price it is really a bragain (although it is less than USD$100 after rebate in the States).

The card "stock" settings should out perform the ATi 3850 and near the performance of the 3870. However with minor overclocking of the clock/shader/memory, it is not hard to catch up the 8800gt. I did some research on the web just now and found that it is very comfortable to have the card overclocked to 680/1750/1600 (clock/shader/memory).

So... good to try! if it fail, ebay it then... not going to be a big lose anyway.

PS:
The tweaktown review is an ASUS 8800GS, which has been factory overclocked.

I gave in...£67 lighter and something that I didn't really need making it's way to me, love this site!

just to put you staight this card even overclocked to the max is no where near the 8800gt 512mb the gs only has 384mb of ram so where is it going to make 128 mb more of ram even overclocking doesnt give you that hense it is a lot slower i have the gt of this xfx card and it blows away most cards on the market the 512mb xfx 8800gt is nearly £100 more the reason this card is so cheap is because it doesnt really have a place in in the line up also the the ati 3870 would kill it its a great price for this card by a premium maker but dont listen to people who say daft things about it being as quick as it big brother because its not and 2 sli wouldnt be either you gain around 20% having 2 and the game has to be able to use sli and why buy 2 when you could get the PNY 8800gt for £111.

Ive just gone over loads of sites to compare and im wondering where this gut got is info because all i found was what i knew the gs gets battered by the gt and people saying that the gs is a badly cippled gt and in terms of speed its 8800gt ,9600gt,3870,8800gs.

£60 odd quid is most peoples budget for a GFX card making this a great Deal with an overclock this will run games like Bioshock, Gears of War, Call of Duty 4, Lost Planet and Assasins Creed DX10 without breaking a sweat at decent rez. Good deal. You dont really need more at the moment.

.....

It's a common misconception that more memory makes for a more powerful GPU, but it doesn't at all!
Clock speed, memory speed, and bus width are FAR more important at resolutions below 1680X1050, so 128mb less isn't going to make much difference generally.
Fair enough, it's no GT, but it is almost 50% the price of one, and normally performs no less than 30% slower, so by far the better value card!

yeah, all i'll say tho those ordering is be wary of saverstore, they are exceptionally hit and miss when it comes to actually fulfilling orders.

personally, i won't touch them again after the carry on i had getting them to cancel the last order i made with them, which said it was in stock at time of purchase, and was paid for with express delivery as it was needed urgently.

it took them almost 2 weeks to even get around to packing it, despite claiming in numerous emails that it was in stock and would be despatched "the following day"

absolute bunch of lying, incompetent Alan B'Stards, frankly.
#28
could this card be used on the base vostro 200 mt system ie the one withe the celeron proc?
#29
"Sorry, this product is currently unavailable."

Sold out, with no information regarding additional stock

If your after a good graphics card go for the 768MB 8800GTX, the prices have really come down on this high end card. I hear you people with 512MB 8800GT's raving how good your card is, but you don't know what 16X AA looks like in crysis, infact your card isn't even that good to be able to select that option.

LMFAO. Get a life, nerd.

I just got a call from Saverstore saying they had sold out, have offered me an Alpha Dog model for £5 extra so agreed, anybody else been offered this deal?:?
#33
yep me to. The chap said it would be with me in 2-3 days. This different 8800GS is slightly faster but still good value for £72.
Id say their customer service was pretty efficient myself, usually shops just cancel the order if it goes out of stock rather than try and sell a slightly more expensive alternative.
#34
that is the price advertised on their site (at least it was yesterday when I bought the other) so they're not doing you any favours but still a decent price, just saves you the bother/uncertainty of overclocking it yourself.

Erm.... yes it is.

And the GS is less than a quarter of the price of a GTX, but isn't a quarter of the performance, so better value for money.

I also got offered the Alpha Dogg version for a fiver extra and though feck it, may as well.

Will the Alpha Dogg version be overclockable any further at all do you think?

any one can argue anything within reason, a 8400gs could run 16AS & 32* AF if the resolution is 128*172 (lol) and on low settings....

if were talking 1920*1080 neither card on ultra settings should be thinking about AA above 2* let alone 16...

but at the end of the day this is an awsome price, I just paid £80 for to 7900Gt's and regret it.
#38
I have a zotac 8800gt 512mb and with medium settings on crysis with AA @ 2, I only get 25fps. That's at 1680/1050.

I recon it would take 2 of them O/Ced to the point of burning to play at very high settings with AA16.
#39
Just found this page on google...
http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/296065-8800-gs-order-bench.html
with the following highlight....

WOW, i just cranked another 1700 3dmarks out of the card, bringing it up to 10847 3dMarks

had to use ATI tool for the actual overclocking as Rivatuner won't talk to the newest drivers yet.. so there's no shader changes
O.C Settings
Core: 580 clocked to 702
Shader: Stock
Memory: 700 clocked to 958

i don't want to go any further without rivatuner as i don't know how the fan is running, but that's def. not bad for $160 woot!

*edit: this thing can definitely push out more though
