I know similar deals have been posted already but not this cheap as far as I can see (unless you count quidco discount which people have had probs with with O2 I believe)

Basically I went into the WInchester O2 store today looking for a cheap mobile broadband deal and the chap told me that the PAYG dongle is half price instore during January for only £10 and with this you get unlimited free wifi access via BT Openzone or the Cloud without topping up the dongle, great as for an emergency or for holidays etc. Mobile broadband rates are the standard;
Mobile Broadband Daily (available for 24 hours) - For £2 for 500MB + Unlimited Wi-Fi
Mobile Broadband Weekly (available for 7 days) - For £7.50 for 1GB + Unlimited Wi-Fi
Mobile Broadband Monthly (available for 30 days) - For £15 for 3GB + Unlimited Wi-Fi

Also has a micro sd slot so it can be used as a memory stick too which is handy.

Is that "free wi-fi" limited to one month of a top-up purchase, or is it free wifi, forever, once you buy the dongle? If it is the latter, this is an amazing deal.

i got same device for xmas and way its put is its free wifi til o2 deactivate the sim inside i guess

Interested too. I got one of these as a present for xmas and they've had trouble getting it going, but if there's free bt openzone then it's worth trying again!. thanks.

I don't know from first hand evidence as I never got my o2 mobile dongle to WiFi, though it did mobile broadband (over o2 mobile network) fine, however o2 have always said, and the T&C's continue to say

"Your O2 Mobile Broadband access will expire:
"(i) in the case of the unlimited Wi-Fi element, when the time period (one day, 7 day or 30 day) expires
; and
"(ii) in the case of the network data element, after your data allowance is used up (500MB, 1GB or 3GB) if this used up before the time period expires or when the time period expires, whichever is sooner. "

ie Your WiFi (via Cloud & BT OpenZone) access lasts for the PERIOD of your mobile broadband top-up (1/7/30 days); whereas your Mobile Broadband lasts for the sooner of DATA or PERIOD.

Clearly the proof of the pudding is in the eating and those who don't want to risk their £10 can buy the dongle online VIA £BACK site and get it for net NIL cost as you buy for £20, have to top-up with £15, but get £35 £BACK. (I did that sorta deal a year ago, ie as a no risk way to trial it, assuming you do your £back requirements properly.)
eg http://www.quidco.com/o2/ though it's been on here several times.

HOWEVER you'd only have a period of 30 days within which to buy that 30 days top-up "In order to receive cashback for PAYG Mobile Broadband you must top up with £15 within the first 30 days to receive your cashback." ie can't keep as an ongoing reserve.

The OP may wish to get back to the store and get a refund as I believe they've been totally misled/missold though clearly an o2 shop employee ought to know their onions so would be interested to know how they square their promise with real dongle WiFi access experience - eg does it somehow work for WiFi UNTIL the first top-up for mobile(&WiFi) ?

How about 90 minutes on BToz for £5.99 ??? because it's "on offer" !?!?! :whistling:
http://www.btopenzone.com/buy/index.jsp

You may be confusing idea that various of those networks WiFi hotspots are within catering/hospitality premises which offer it free and usually offer their own ID/password to (paying/visiting) customers.

I have one of these and have used the free wifi when I was not in the period I had paid for data, I think it is cloud only as well not BT Openzone
#8
cloud free anyway as i park outrside mc donalds on nights shifts lol
#9
I guess it wont be long until all wifi is free - and its just those like BT who try to screw every penny out of you that will try to prevent it happening.

If you have with BT and have a router that works with FON - detach the antenna so you cannot share (if you use it wired) and they cannot detect its not sharing - so you still get free access elsewhere.

Probably about 10% if houses in the UK just now dont need to buy broadband - as they could use a FON connection if someone sharing lets them.

Mcdonalds is free, but I think it depends on the retailer

I think you do need to top up to get wifi. Have you tried it yet?
#13
Good price for the dongle, but the O2 software it comes with is almost useless
#14
Can confirm, I've been using it all afternoon on a BT Openzone wifi hotspot without funding it at all. PAYG balance shows as £0.

Software seems excellent to me? Also it has a micro sd slot so you can use it as a memory stick too :-)

It's not. If you agree to make your router a fon router (i.e. letting others access it) then in return, you get the access other fon routers. Its basically a network of people that let other people in the network use their broadband connection. Hence why they said to take off the antenna (a bit unfair on others in the network imo though).
#18
I have a couple of questions (they may seem a bit silly) Firstly, when you pay £15 and you get 3gb to use, what exactly does the "unlimited wifi" part mean? I am thinking of getting one of these, but that bit confuses me! And secondly, I have a FON router which is open for sharing, however, when I log in at other FON or BT spots with my details, it still says I have to pay, from what I remember, I was told I would get free FON access in return for sharing some of my bandwidth. Am I right or wrong or has anybody else had this problem?
#19
i can access Fon at my new place....i was thinking of buying their router thingy £24.99...i understand i have to let them access /share a broadband connection with me elsewhere.i have talktalk broadband with a BT phone line at work....can i set it up from there, allow them access to that,so giving me 'free' access at home?

thanx in ad vans

It works out free if you buy it online, though.

TopCashback pay £35 cashback if you buy the O2 PAYG mobile broadband. That costs £20, plus you have to top up by £15 within 30 days. So you have to pay out £35, but you get £35 cashback.

it was last Sunday I asked the staff in O2 Nottingham, he said it is only for new customer who buy a new handset at the same time.

can anyone confirm?
#22
Just a heads up, this deal is in fact due to end TODAY.

It is down from £30 to £20 for January and it's half price from last Thursday to today so if you're looking for it head out and pick one up.

42 Sauchiehall Street Glasgow have plenty in stock for anyone nearby.

My apologies, it is half price when bought with a handset throughout january, but buying it standalone at half price ends today.

mumbojumbo
You still have to pay for FON access unless you are already paying for BT broadband. :whistling:

No you don't. Fon isn't exclusive to BT. You can put a Fonera on any network you like.

Got one of these 6 months ago, and bought an iphone PAYG sim off ebay, but never managed to work out how to change the settings in order to get 12 months free usage.

Can anybody PM me to explain how to do it :)
#26
Are these easy to unlock? Also, would I be able to transfer the £15 credit to a normal PAYG mobile account (after the cashback comes through)?

EDIT: I just asked O2 and they confirmed they come unlocked. Brilliant deal!

Yeah, read my post again!

Does anyone know how long the credit lasts for (just credit on the account, not activated as any form of broadband package) and whether it can be transferred to a voice sim?
#30
does anyone know if you can transfer credit from a o2 pay as you go mobile to the mobile broadband????

Thanks SunTzu! This deal has been included in Bitterwallet's deals of the day!

Just discovered you can get this online for £10 if you order a Text and Web PAYG SIM for 50p.
If you go here http://shop.o2.co.uk/tariffs/pay_and_go/sim_only
Then select the Text and Web SIM. At the top of the next page you are offered the E160 dongle in black for £10.
http://shop.o2.co.uk/promo/o2mobilebroadband/tab/halfprice

Don't know if you would still get the £35 cashback via Quidco or Topcashback!
#34
mumbojumbo
Did you manage to complete the order @ £10? Tried 3 times, it goes right to the Bank verification page but won't accept the order? :?

Didn't actually order one
I already have 2, the first one I got the cashback from Quidco without topping up with £15, the second, also not topped up, has tracked but not validated or declined yet. So I have effectively got two for nothing so far.

Thanks for that.

Just after I accepted the order, I noticed on the order summary the dongle is "pay monthly". It didnt ask for any details like bank account etc. so I guess its just an error, but did anyone elses say that?

EDIT: I went through the process again (without ordering) and it does state it's PAYG several times so it must just be a mistake.
#36
how many of these can be bought from one account? im after 2, possible?
#37
is the wifi restricted to the mac code of the modem? I already have an O2 modem so rather use that than open this new one.

Or can I just pop the simcard into the old one?
#38
Openzone access for free forever even without credit seems a little unlikely? Is it true? I can imagine that if you pay for 30 days/3gb you get with wifi for all 30 days even if you are over your 3gb but after that when your 30 days is up seems unlikely?

Also I don't think openzone is authenticated by the dongle, you load the o2 connect software and when you connect to an openzone point you type in your o2 telephone number and then it checks that is allowed, or something even if you don't have the dongle plugged in. But I could be wrong... I welcome correction a clarrification.
