For those looking for a prepaid card, O2 have just launched 2 prepaid cards - Cash Manager and Load & Go. Works like a Visa debit card. This is only available for active O2 customers.

What's the difference between Cash Manager and Load & Go cards?
You can load money onto a Cash Manager card online using a UK debit card. With Load & Go, you can load money online, or you can put cash onto your card at O2 shops, any independent retailer or petrol station that show either the PayPoint or e-pay signs or anywhere you see a PayPoint or e-pay sign.

Good thing I noticed is that the card is free to obtain with free UK atm withdrawals. 2.75% of transaction value for non-UK. And you get a refund of any funds left over when you cancel the card (unlike some I've seen!)

I think these will be good for taking to festivals / gigs where there's so many people about and you don't want to take risk losing your wallet.

For a limited time, they are offering a £5 thank you when you load the card with at least£50 in consecutive months.

No account opening fees, no topup fees, no withdrawal or other transaction fees within the UK. Every other prepay card of this type will hit you with charges for one or more of those things. This is cracking!
#3
This is VERY GOOD!! Heat and rep added..Thanks!

if this is visa electron you can pay for ryanair flight free of charge

but 1800gbp per year load limit is very low

I'm sure pre-pay cards can't be used to buy flights or book hotel rooms.

Russell

I don't see why not. People have been using Entropay virtual/online visa electron to book Ryanair flights for months.. you can have one from scratch in minutes. ;-)
although this O2 card seems to be a straight Visa so you'll still have to pay card charges @ Ryanair.

So load & Go card is better?

You can use your card almost anywhere Visa is accepted. A few specific restrictions apply if you're using your card for reservations or deposits, for example in hotels, car rentals or pay-at-pump services at petrol stations. You won't be able to use your card for wire transfer money orders. Further restrictions may apply to all Load & Go cards to prevent inappropriate use.

do they credit check?

Good find, Appears to be a visa debit rather than an electron. But still great find.

Advice: I 've been living abroad for some time now and the only account I kept in the UK was a hbos visa electron account. Just incase I needed cash while abroad. I find that unless you want to use it for the likes of 'Ryanair' and suchlike and it has no charge then cool, but now i'm back in the UK I feel that it's not the best. Unable to use it for certain things which a VISA debit card, Maestro or Switch can do. This is a great idea from O2, especially not when the likes of me, cannot get a VISA card via the bank I have been with for many, many, many years....(because of lack of income form living abroad i'm told) I just wish the link would work for me and I'd be happy. Hope this helps someone if anyone......

You have a £1,800 annual load limit, your maximum annual cash withdrawal limit is £720 - that's the same as £60 a month from an ATM - does anyone know what this means please?

Just tried to register mine but wouldn't work, get invalid mobile number and to call 202. Basically looks like this offer is for people who bought their contract directly from O2. I am on O2 but I bought my phone through Carphone warehouse.

1.6 Cardholders whose identity the Bank is unable to verify at the time the Card is first issued may not load more than £1,800 a Year.

1.7 In order to load a Card, the Cardholder must be an Active O2 Customer. Subject to clause 1.8 below, an "Active O2 Customer" is:

1.7.1 A current O2 Pay & Go customer who has bought at least £10 airtime in the last three months; or
1.7.2 An O2 Pay Monthly customer who has a current O2 Pay Monthly contract.

1.8 The Cardholder will not be an Active O2 Customer if the O2 mobile phone account of the Cardholder is terminated for any reason or the O2 mobile phone number of the Cardholder is ported to another mobile phone service provider.

1.9 Subject to clause 1.8, if a Cardholder who is an O2 Pay & Go customer subsequently meets the criteria set out in 1.7.1, there will be no further restrictions on loading the Card.

Load and go is for 13 -16 year olds ONLY. Over 16 and you have to have the Cash Manager. (See their T&C's)

Why can't you use it at pay-pumps? :?

I have read and accept the risk that this type of card is not covered by The Financial Services Compensation Scheme. If O2's banking partner National Westminster Bank Plc were to go out of business I'd lose the money on my Card.

LOL

Nope.

Is there a charge to get the O2 Money card? No. It's one of the perks of being an O2 mobile user. But if you're on Pay & Go, you need to have topped up £10 in the last three months and continue to do so to keep the card active

Looks like it is for 'real' O2 PAYG users..... otherwise it'd be like paying a fee to have the card!

#33
Heh, not much use for me.. I've not topped up since last september, despite using my PAYG sim every day..

I'm an iphone user, I really only use the data regularly :P, though I have used about 15 quid credit now since then, but I had about 40 due to various reasons..
#34
I believe the reason it says this type of card can't be used "for reservations or deposits, for example in hotels, car rentals or pay-at-pump services at petrol stations" is because they are all services where an amount of money is reserved on your account to cover any potential charges, before it is actually charged. I guess because you can't go overdrawn on a prepaid card it introduces complications when pre-authorising funds.

However, if you are pre-paying for a hotel etc. there shouldn't be a problem...they're only saying it isn't allowed for hotels where they pre-authorise your card at time of booking and actually charge it when you check-out.

In addition (someone please correct me if i'm wrong), isn't the entropay card just a standard visa card, but the ryanair website recognises it as visa electron? If so, couldn't the same be true for this card, as it is also prepaid?

Interesting point in the T&Cs of the free £5 offer:

8. The Regular Monthly Loads must be made using only a UK Visa debit card to an active O2 Money card.

So, suggests you already need to have a Visa card to take advantage.which you may not have if your bank issues Solo/Maestro.
#36
Any use of these? I think they are good for people with low credit ratings, otherwise have no benefit to me its basically same as most debit cards.

I did the questionnaire for which o2 recommends which card you should choose. I ticked over 18 and it still recommended me the Load and Go so I went for it.

I just signed up and can now log in to the my money o2 section. I have clicked the load funds button and you can load it with visa, visa electron, maestro or solo.

Edit: Actually it looks like you can only set up a regular monthly load with a visa and not with the other cards therefore yes you are correct if you want the free £5
#38
You can also load money onto the card at O2 stores, just like topping up your mobile phone! The staff swipe your card and load money onto it.

I am getting on to help me budget my money for the month. Hot deal!!

if it was visa electron wud be much better
