is the adsl bit any better than the old one? My O2 box has been configured to act as purely a modem as the wireless signal and capabilities are crap. I mean would my download speed be any better?
#3
Reserved mine for collection this morning.
Cheers OP.
#4
Worth noting that three stores have now told me that this is for new customers only. Existing customers need not apply.
#5
So this has adls 2 modem as well?
When i look for it on the site, i cant seem to find it.
Can someone advise, this is a bargin if this has a modem in as well.

where on the site is it for a look and store reservation...cant see it

Yes this is definitely an ADSL2 unit. I checked my line speed before and after install with speedtest.net and can confirm that for me my sustained download speed went up by 18%. It has remained at this level over the 3 weeks that it has been installed. Wireless connection is good too.

I am with O2 for broadband, unfortunately their modems are utter carp so I use a Netgear DG834GT with custom firmware on it which lets you adjust the SNR percentage thus increasing your up and download speeds. I've been using it for over a year and it's been great, when I first set it up my download speeds doubled!!

can some one post the link here please!!!!

I can confirm that this is nationwide. Was told of this when getting my girlfriend a new phone yesterday. It is definitely on until closing time on Sunday (tomorrow.)

i just came back from wood green shop, they never heard about that, a call broadband customer service and the same story, they never heard about that and no info online about that deal
#12
Bah! My local store is closed for refurbishment.

OMG Thompson router? If its anything like the Thomson routers supplied by Be (owed by O2) this router is going to be a mind numbing pain in the backside, particularly if you use the router for anything for than basic internet/email.
#14
Stockport store just told me they are selling them for £10 if you buy something else with it
#15
Just call in barnet spires o2 0208 440 0468

Exactly what I was thinking.

Worst router brand I've ever experienced.
#20
Is this just for o2 broadband customers, and do you need to show proof? I take it wont be a problem of using it on another adsl provider?
#21
It is an improvement on the standard router, it being N technology.
My across the network wireless speeds have improved a lot but my upload/download at the router has remained the same.

gutted im an existing customer and that means i cant go down and buy one..
#23
Tried three and they say new customers only.
#24
i called three different stores and this seems to be only for new customer.
#25
So can I pick one of these up when I'm not an O2 customer without becoming one? (other than paying for the router of course!)
#26
Just to clear up a few misconceptions on this thread >

The existing Wireless Box III is a Thompson TG585n, this is a Wireless N capable router. The Wireless Box IV is a TG587n which is essentially a TG585N but it has USB ports for sharing USB devices on your network.

In my experience the Wireless Box III is stable on the latest O2 firmware which is 8.2.N.1. I would have no hesitation in getting a Wireless Box IV, in fact I will speak to customer services about it.

The router has O2 firmware and doesn't accept login details. O2 use RFC1483 Bridged/ETHoA or IPoATM (IP over ATM) IPoA. There would be no point buying this router other than for use on O2, unless there's a way of unlocking it and changing the firmware back to Thomson original firmware.

Judging by what I have seen on Google about the other o2 boxes, its locked to O2 and not easy/maybe not possible to flash.

I've just phoned the O2 store in Crewe and they tell me that this deal is now for new customers only as a lot of people have been buying them for £9.99 and selling them on. He did say that some stores may still sell to anyone who walks in but certainly in this area down to Birmingham they have clamped down on it.

His only advice was to ring customer services and see if they could send one out to me for the same price.

just called my local o2 and guy said u dont need to be a new customer. just buy the router only for £10!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Fishmaster,

Are you sure on this one? It looks like people were able to log on those routers and change the configuration.
Just wanna know if it worths buying one or not.

I don't know how it's done, but these routers have been locked to o2 broadband and unless there's some custom firmware you can install on it, you have no options to change stuff like VPI/VCI/Encapsulation etc like some ISP's require.

Broadband in a box are always new customers only (so that the router can be registered to your specific account correctly). If an existing customer buys this and requires support, it's unlikely you'll get it. And IF an existing customer did get this working and you then have broadband issues, you would probably be required to switch back to your original router for diagnostics.

IF you seriously want this router and you are an existing customer, the only official channel for getting it is to switch your package to either 'The All Rounder' or 'The Works'. I can understand how this may not be ideal if you want to remain on the old Premium or Pro package, but again it's the only official way of getting the Wireless Box IV for existing customers.

If you can give me a link to unlocking the box specific to this thread then I'll happily believe you. A brief google search didn't find any answers for me.

Judging from your avatar are you serious, you obviously know about DGTeam firmware in which you can alter your SNR percentage.

Last thread some guys were able to log as Administrator (default account) and the serial number of the modem as a password.
